UniMas Quick Picks

Oscar Valdez vs. Ernie Sanchez: There will be a ton of fights this Saturday so while the card on the Spanish language network UniMas might get overlooked that card may also give fans a glimpse into the future.  The card will feature two high level prospects one of which will be in the main event.  That prospect is Oscar Valdez (17-0, 15 KO) who has been nothing short of amazing on his way up the ladder.  Valdez will be in a showcase fight against Ernie Sanchez (15-6-1, 6 KO) who has a very high number of losses for a fighter that is only 23-years-old.  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the featherweight division and it could very well be the last fight for Valdez at this level before he moves to contender status.  Valdez is an orthodox fighter with plenty of power.  The young fighter has a decent jab and can fight well from the outside or in the pocket but his power punches are what to watch for.  Valdez has plus power in both hands so he is dangerous whether he is throwing his vicious left hook or big overhand right.  One thing he does well for such a young fighter is attack the body and that should help him moving forward and he shouldn't have any problems come Saturday night.  The reason Valdez shouldn't have a difficult time on Saturday is because Sanchez is simply not at his level.  Sanchez hails from the Philippines and has not been good as of late, putting together a record of 1-3-1 in his last five fights and while some of this opponents have been good he did score a draw against a 15-17-2 fighter.  Sanchez is also an orthodox fighter but he lacks the power that Valdez has.  While his straight right hand is accurate he usually squares up when he throws it so if Valdez can time that punch it could be bad news for Sanchez.  Sanchez will throw his left hook with bad intentions but he throws that punch very wide so it doesn't always find a home.  This fight should really be nothing more than a showcase for Valdez and he will look good and stop Sanchez in the 5th round.

Jose Benavidez Jr. vs. Sidney Siqueira: The other prospect to pay attention to on Saturday is Jose Benavidez Jr. (23-0, 16 KO).  Benavidez will be taking on the 38-year-old Sidney Siqueira (26-10-1, 17 KO) in a 10-round bout in the welterweight division.  The young Benavidez finds himself with a perfect record but he is lucky to have it.  In 2014 Benavidez took on Mauricio Herrera and the judges gave him a unanimous decision gift, although most watching the fight that he lost a clear decision.  That record should remain perfect at least for another fight though because Siqueira will be there to play the role of opponent.  Siqueira does have one big name on his resume in Terence Crawford who he lost to in 2012 before Crawford had really made a name for himself.  Benavidez is a tall fighter for the welterweight division and he fights out of the orthodox stance.  His best punch may be his straight right hand and his jab is also a weapon that allows him to control fights from the outside with his long arms.  The young fighter also has a decent left hook but the punch to pay attention to is the straight right hand.  As fans saw against Herrera, Benavidez can sometimes spend too much time against the ropes and he does not fight well from that position.  As for Siqueira, he fights out of Brazil which isn't a country known for producing great boxers.  He fights out of the orthodox stance but has slow hands and typically he likes to just throw a lot of one-twos.  Siqueira's left hooks isn't a punch Benavidez will have to worry about and while his best punch is his overhand right Benavidez shouldn't eat too many of those either.  Like the main event this will be a showcase fight and that showcase will last until the 9th round when Benavidez stops Siqueira.
