truTV Quick Picks

Felix Verdejo vs. Josenilson Dos Santos: There will be competing fight cards this Friday but the one with more clout will be on truTV.  That card will be headlined by Puerto Rican prospect and potential future superstar Felix Verdejo (18-0, 13 KO).  Verdejo will be taking on Brazilian Josenilson Dos Santos (27-3, 17 KO) in a 10-round bout in the lightweight division.  This will be Verdejo's first fight back after surgery on his left hand to remove bone spurs and he is coming off of a two knockdown unanimous decision win over Ivan Najera.  Meanwhile Dos Santos will be trying to rebound after a knockout loss in his last fight and a 1-2 record with two knockouts in his last three fights.  Verdejo is an orthodox fighter who seems to have all the tools to make him a future champion and star.  The Puerto Rican has fast hands and good power and he has a very athletic style.  The jab of Verdejo is a dangerous weapon, especially when he is pumping it to the body and his straight right hand can't be slept on.  His best punch however, is probably his left hook and he can end fights with that punch.  Dos Santos is also an orthodox fighter and he has rarely fought outside of his native Brazil.  The Brazilian has a bad habit of letting his opponents dictate the fight and he isn't exactly pretty to watch.  When it comes to his weaponry Dos Santos is limited to a decent looking straight right hand and a wild left hook.  Also, Dos Santos isn't a very busy fighter and will often spend long stretches patiently waiting behind a high guard.  The only reason this fight would be close is if Verdejo feels some ring rust or is uneasy about his recently operated on left hand.  If neither of those things happen, which they probably won't, this fight will be all Verdejo.  If Dos Santos plays it safe he could make it to the final bell standing but Verdejo should be aggressive and he will knock Dos Santos out in the 7th round.

Nonito Donaire vs. Cesar Juarez: While it may seem like a lifetime ago that Nonito Donaire (35-3, 23 KO) won the Fighter of the Year award in actuality it was only three years ago.  Donaire has two recent losses on his resume but since losing to Nicholas Walters and moving back down to junior featherweight "The Filipino Flash" has gone 2-0 with two knockouts.  Now Donaire will take on Cesar Juarez (17-3, 13 KO) in a 12-round bout for a vacant WBO junior featherweight title.  Donaire is an orthodox boxer-puncher who throws a good looking jab that helps him set up his power punches.  Those power punches come in the form of an accurate straight right hand and a brutal left hook that can end a fight whether or it lands upstairs or to the body.  As for Juarez, who is also an orthodox fighter and he has solid power.  While the Mexican fighter lacks a good jab or refined skills he does have a solid chin and the ability to makes fights tough on the inside.  He always puts a lot behind his straight right hand and he has some success with his left hook on the inside.  The best chance Juarez has to win this fight is to make Donaire stay in the pocket and slug it out.  The problem for Juarez in that scenario though is the fact that Donaire is a one punch knockout type fighter while Juarez is the type of fighter who wears opponents down over the course of 10 or 12 rounds.  While Juarez could give him some tough rounds Donaire shouldn't have a very difficult time against the Mexican fighter and he will win the fight by the way of 11th round stoppage.
