PBC on NBC Sports Quick Picks

Ortiz still believes he can be one of the best
Victor Ortiz vs. Gilberto Sanchez Leon: Along with Saturday's PBC card on NBC there will also be fights aired on NBC Sports.  One of those fights will air before the 8:30 card set to air on NBC and the other will air after those fights have ended.  The fight scheduled for the afternoon features Victor Ortiz (30-5-2, 23 KO) as he sets to take on Gilberto Sanchez Leon (33-13-2, 13 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division and it will be Ortiz's first fight back from wrist surgery.  Ortiz won't just be rebounding from a wrist injury though, he will be trying to rebound from some recent bad performances.  In his last five fights Ortiz has gone 2-3 and in his five career losses he has been knocked out four times.  Ortiz is a southpaw who has a lot of power but not much heart.  Something else Ortiz lacks is a great chin but that shouldn't be a problem against the light hitting Leon.  Ortiz does have a nice right hook and his jab is decent but it seems like a lifetime ago that Ortiz tested his mettle and went to war with Andre Berto.  Like Berto, Leon has not had much success lately.  In his past 10 fights he has gone 4-6.  Leon is an orthodox fighter without much power.  One thing Leon does well is jab and he can control the distance with that punch when he uses it often.  That jab is Leon's most used weapon because he doesn't have much of a left hook although he does have a good straight right hand.  This is a make or break fight for Ortiz because a loss to Leon would be almost impossible to come back from and fight at the highest level.  Luckily for Ortiz, Leon doesn't do much besides jab so as long as Ortiz is busier he will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Gausha will look to stay perfect on Saturday
Terrell Gausha vs. Said El Harrak: The fight that will air after the fights on regular NBC will be headlined by former Olympian Terrell Gausha (16-0, 8 KO).  Gausha will be taking on Said El Harrak (12-3-2, 7 KO) in a 10-round bout in the middleweight division.  Gausha is an orthodox fighter who likes to counter punch.  While he isn't the busiest fighter he does flash a good jab and straight right hand and he does his best work from the outside.  Harrak is actually a similar fighter to Gausha in that he has a good jab and stiff straight right hand.  However, Harrak often squares up too much when he throws that straight right hand so look for Gausha to take advantage of that.  Also, sometimes when Harrak throws a combination he doesn't bring his hands back up to a safe defensive position.  This fight should be more of a chess match than any of the other fights on the NBC or NBC Sports.  Expect to see a lot of jabs and straight right hands and because Harrak squares up too much Guasha's counter punches should find their target and he will get the unanimous decision victory.
