2015 Round of the Year

Winner
Round 1: Edwin Rodriguez vs. Michael Seals

Entering this fight Edwin Rodriguez was a big favorite over Michael Seals and that is how he acted.  When the opening bell rang Rodriguez jumped all over Seals, throwing wild, heavy punches and got him in trouble in the corner.  A left hook by Rodriguez sent Seals to the canvas and it looked like it could be a quick night of work for Rodriguez.  After Seals made it to his feet Rodriguez went on the attack again and opened up even more which allowed Seals to catch him with a short counter right that dropped him.  Rodriguez's legs were in bad shape and he stayed on a knee until the count reached eight at which point he got up.  From there both fighters showed more respect for the power of the other.  Then with about 15 seconds left in the round Seals caught Rodriguez with another right hand that sent him flailing to the canvas.  When Rodriguez tried to stand up he fell over and was clearly in very bad shape.  He was able to make it to his feet but he was still badly hurt but luckily for him the bell sounded to end the round and he was able to stumble back to his corner, avoiding the big upset loss.  The fight ended two rounds later but the first round is the one fans will remember.

Runner-Up
Round 1: Daniel Jacobs vs. Sergio Mora

Much like the winner of Big Time Boxing's 2015 Round of the Year the runner-up happened in the opening round.  Daniel Jacobs was the favorite coming in against veteran Sergio Mora and he looked calm and confident early in the round while Mora flashed a busy jab.  About halfway through the round Jacobs caught Mora with a short right hand that sent Mora to the canvas like he was shot with a bullet.  Mora recovered quickly and when Jacobs went in for the kill he got careless and was caught with a left hook by Mora that sent him to the canvas.  The rest of the round was mostly Jacobs but this looked like it would be a good fight.  Unfortunately an injury to Mora in the second round left him unable to continue giving Jacobs the win but when fans think about this fight it will be the opening act they most remember.

Honorable Mention
Round 6: Krzysztof Glowacki vs. Marco Huck

In August Marco Huck took on the relatively unknown Krzysztof Glowacki in a cruiserweight title fight.  While Glowacki got off to a good start slowly Huck started to turn things around and take control.  Huck really started to come on in the sixth round and very early in the round he caught the challenger with a monster left hand that sent Glowacki crumbling to the canvas, almost in slow motion.  It was the first time Glowacki had been dropped and he appeared to be in very bad shape.  Referee David Fields could have easily stopped the fight there but he let Glowacki continue, and fans are glad he did.  Glowacki didn't play it safe and came back throwing heavy leather and he and Huck traded punches for the rest of the round.  While this round only reach the honorable mention slot this fight is also in the running for Fight of the Year as well as Knockout of the Year so keep an eye out for it.

In the Running
Round 9: Cristian Mijares vs. Vergel Nebran
The ninth round between Cristian Mijares and Vergel Nebran didn't start off all that exciting.  Mijares was in control and not much was happening.  Then with a minute left in the round Mijares caught Nebran with a left hook that floored him.  Nebran beat the count but was in bad shape.  While most fighters would have gone into survival mode Nebran went to work.  With Mijares pouring on the punches Nebran never stopped throwing return fire.  For most of the last minute of the round Nebran was on the ropes and could have been stopped but he didn't let that happen because he showed a tremendous amount of heart and kept his hands moving even though whenever he loaded up for a punch he usually ate a big punch from Mijares.

Round 3: Amir Imam vs. Fidel Maldonado Jr.
2015 was a rough year for Amir Imam, most notable because he lost to Adrian Granados in November and lost out on a title shot.  But his earlier fight against Fidel Maldonado Jr. may have been a foreshadowing of that loss.  Imam was the favorite against Maldonado and had dropped him in the second round.  However, at the beginning of the third round Imam was dropped by a Maldonado left hand.  Imam was able to beat the count and despite eating a few more big punches in the round he was able to use his hand speed and power to floor Maldonado twice before the round ended.  It was an exciting round and while Imam won the fight he finds himself in unfamiliar territory heading into 2016.

Round 1: Thomas Williams Jr. vs. Umberto Savigne
There was just something about first rounds in 2015 and the opening frame between Thomas Williams and Umberto Savigne was another good one.  Both fighters are known for having good power but weak chins and both had recent knockout losses, Williams' coming in 2014 and Savigne losing earlier in 2015.  When they faced each other fans expected to see some knockdowns but no one expected to see two in the very first round.  Williams struck first, dropping Savigne with a right hand but Savigne came back later in the round with a right hand of his own to drop Williams.  The knockdowns traded in the opening round were enough to put round one of this fight on the list.
