Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Everyone was waiting to see how Timothy Bradley would look under new trainer Teddy Atlas and he looked better than ever.  Bradley may have turned in the most impressive performance of his career when he stopped warrior Brandon Rios in the 9th round of their fight.  The fight was on Saturday night on HBO and the outcome was never really in question as Bradley dominated from start to finish.  The combination of Bradley at Atlas seems to be perfect and it will be fun to see how far they can go together.  Also on that HBO card was the extremely talented Vasyl Lomachenko.  While it was disappointing to see Lomachenko in with a lesser opponent in Romulo Koasicha, he still impressed.  In his career Koasicha had never been stopped but Lomachenko changed that when he hurt him to the body and stopped him in the 10th round.  Hopefully what comes next is a battle of amateur legends in Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

  • After losing to Timothy Bradley the always entertaining Brandon Rios announced his retirement.  In a post-fight interview with HBO's Max Kellerman, Rios said his body wasn't responding the way it used to and it was time for him to hang up his gloves.  Rios was overweight at Friday's weigh-in but made the 147 pound limit only after stripping naked.  Then on fight night Rios entered the ring at 170 pounds.  Clearly making weight is a serious issue for Rios who hasn't looked totally comfortable since leaving the lightweight division.  Chances are that Rios will return and his announcement was fueled by emotions after a tough loss, but if he does in fact retire he should be applauded for always giving fans an incredible show.

  • The HBO card was the only one on Saturday night.  The PBC also put on a card on NBC Sports.  It was headlined by the undefeated Fredrick Lawson as he took on Kevin Bizier.  It was an exciting fight and Lawson was surprised when he got dropped in the 5th round.  Later the action was stopped when Lawson didn't answer the bell after it appeared he may have broken his jaw, giving him his first loss as a professional.  The other fight on that care pitted Keita Obara against Walter Castillo and fans were not happy when it ended.  The action was very good throughout the fight but as the rounds wore on it appeared that Obara was putting a hurting on Castillo.  When the scores were announced one judge had it for Obara while the other two had it a draw.

  • On Friday night the prospects were in action on another edition of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation.  The main event of that fight featured Antoine Douglas who was looking to graduate to contender status and he was able to do so impressively.  Douglas took on Australia's Les Sherrington and dropped him five times in four rounds before the fight was stopped.  While Douglas isn't ready for a shot at the middleweight title yet he is ready for a former champion and is definitely a fighter to keep an eye on.  Also on that Showtime card was Ukrainian prospect Taras Shelestyuk who took on Aslanbek Kozaev and boxed his way to a near shutout unanimous decision in an impressive performance.
