Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There were some impressive performances this weekend but none were better than the one turned in by Gabriel Bracero.  Bracero took on Danny O'Connor in a rematch of their 2011 fight that O'Connor won by a wide margin.  This fight would be totally different.  Bracero who entered the match with only four career knockouts starched O'Connor in the very 1st round.  It wasn't just a surprising knockout, it is also a strong contender to win Big Time Boxing's 2015 Knockout of the Year award.  Also on that NBC Sports card was prospect Jonathan Guzman who dominated Danny Aquino before stopping him in the 9th round.  Guzman dropped Aquino three times in that fight, including twice in the 2nd round and the fight was never in question.

  • Another big knockout came early in the week on Fox Sports 1.  The bout between Julius Jackson and Jose Uzcategui was supposed to be a good one, but Uzcategui had other plans.  The Venezuelan fighter jumped all over Jackson in the 1st round and dropped him three times.  It was clear that Jackson was in bad shape coming out for the 2nd round and Uzcategui wasted no time closing the show.  He got Jackson in trouble on the ropes and landed a few punches as Jackson tried to move out of danger that sent him to the canvas which then forced referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight.  In the opening bout of that card Miguel Vazquez took on Argenis Mendez in a fight that both men needed to win.  It was an ugly fight that looked like it would end in a draw or with either fighter winning by a round or two.  Instead Mendez got the unanimous decision win.  One judge had it 95-94 for Mendez, a good score considering a point deduction for Vazquez for clinching.  The other two judges had it 97-92 which isn't great and 99-90 which is a complete joke, but in boxing fans have come to expect terrible judging.

  • On Saturday night Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's brother Roman Alvarez was in action against late fill-in Ben Tackie.  It was pretty quick work for Alvarez who stopped Tackie standing in the 4th round.  Alvarez, like his brother, goes to the body very well and against Tackie that body attack was on full display.  Once Alvarez had Tackie hurt to the body he went upstairs and unleashed a number of punches, when Tackie didn't return fire the referee stopped the fight.

  • The other notable fight from last weekend aired on Telemundo.  That fight featured boxing's first openly gay fighter, Orlando Cruz taking on Gabino Cota.  Cruz is trying to fight his way back to a shot at the title after being knocked out by Orlando Salido and then losing to Gamalier Rodriguez.  Although Cota isn't a top shelf opponent Cruz did take a step in the right direction by securing the unanimous decision win in a fight that was actually pretty close.
