PBC on NBC Sports Quick Pick

Jermell Charlo vs. Joachim Alcine: This Saturday junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo (26-0, 11 KO) will be back in action.  Charlo will headline a PBC card on NBC Sports and his opponent will be the veteran Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KO) in a fight scheduled to go 10 rounds.  Charlo is fresh off the biggest win of his career when he beat Vanes Martirosyan by the way of unanimous decision earlier this year.  Alcine hasn't been so great as of late and in his past 10 fights his record is an ugly 3-5-2, although he was facing good young opponents at the time.  Still it seems like a step backward for Charlo who should be taking on better opponents each time he enters the ring if he wants to become a big name in the sport.  Charlo is an orthodox boxer and unlike his twin brother Jermall he doesn't have much power.  However, he is the better boxer and he will look to showcase those skills against the aging Alcine.  Charlo has quick hands and he does a nice job of controlling the distance with his jab.  Along with that jab Charlo has a strong straight right hand and that may be his best punch.  Perhaps most impressive of all is the defense of Charlo which is top notch and usually allows him to avoid any serious punishment.  Usually Charlo likes to fight from the outside where he can use his hand speed and defense to his advantage.  For Alcine this will be his first fight of 2015 following a 2014 draw against Delvin Rodriguez.  Alcine is also an orthodox fighter and he has a bad habit of keeping his jab had low so he will be open for Charlo's straight right hand.  The jab from Alcine is a decent one but he doesn't have very fast hands and he isn't a very busy fighter.  Occasionally thought Alcine with throw a solid left hook and a strong but very wild overhand right.  The one and perhaps only advantage Alcine has against Charlo is experience.  While Charlo's best opponent was Martirosyan, Alcine has fought the likes of David Lemieux, Alfredo Angulo, Matthew Macklin, and Julian Williams.  That experience hasn't been great for Alcine though because he has lost the majority of this fights and on Saturday night Charlo will add another loss to that list when he beats Alcine by the way of unanimous decision.

Tony Harrison vs. Cecil McCalla: The co-feature of Saturday's PBC card will feature a fighter who looked like he was on the verge of some big fights when disaster struck.  That fight is Tony Harrison (21-1, 18 KO) who was undefeated and 2-0 with two knockouts in 2015 when he took on fellow prospect Willie Nelson.  While Nelson is a solid fighter Harrison was the favorite and he looked the part early in the fight.  However, in the 9th round with Harrison seemingly ahead on the cards Nelson caught him with a right hand that sent him to the canvas and ended the fight.  Harrison was able to make it to his feet but he turned his back to the ref and stumbled into the corner which forced the ref to stop the fight.  On Saturday Harrison will take on the light hitting Cecil McCalla (20-2, 7 KO) in a 10-round bout in the junior middleweight division that shouldn't be much more than a comeback and look good fight for Harrison.  Harrison's slender frame along with his power and the fact that he fights out of Detroit had many fans comparing him to Tommy Hearns but if he ever wants to reach that level he has a lot of work to do.  Harrison is an orthodox fighter with a stiff jab and good power in both hands.  With his jab Harrison has a stiff straight right hand and a lights out left hook that can end a fight.  On the inside Harrison does a nice job of landing his uppercuts but his chin is now a huge question considering Nelson isn't known as a heavy handed fighter.  Harrison is getting McCalla at a good time because after going undefeated through his first 20 professional fights McCalla has now lost his last two fights in a row.  McCalla is an orthodox fighter who has quick hands.  He shows off that quickness with a good jab and a winging right hand.  Fortunately for Harrison though McCalla shouldn't be able to really test his chin and when he has scored knockouts they have come against horrendous opponents.  McCalla does have a chance to outbox Harrison but that isn't likely as Harrison should look good in this comback fight and get the win with an 8th round stoppage.
