Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There were some big names in action this weekend, most notably Deontay Wilder.  Unfortunately Wilder was in with a no name opponent who no one expected to win.  Wilder looked good at times but very sloppy at others and his stock certainly took a hit, albeit a small one, against Johann Duhaupas.  Wilder stopped the ironed chinned Duhaupas in the 11th round but the champion was never able to drop the challenger and left the ring with a badly swollen left eye.  It appears that Wilder's next fight will be against Alexander Povetkin and that fight could make or break the young American's career.

  • Another American heavyweight fought on the Wilder card and that was Dominic Breazeale.  Breazeale entered the fight undefeated and left the ring with a record of 16-0 with 4 knockouts but simply put he looked bad.  Breazeale is still fairly new to the sport and at 6-foot 7-inches looked like a fighter to pay attention to, but on Saturday evening he did not impress and did not appear to have any real boxing skills in the ring.  To make matters worse the judges awarded him a unanimous decision win over Fred Kassi and one judge even had it as a shutout for Breazeale in a fight that it looked like Kassi won.

  • Earlier in the week rising prospect Julian Williams found himself in action against Luciano Cuello and he absolutely destroyed him via 1st round stoppage.  Austin Trout was acting as an analyst for that fight and he and Williams have been calling each other out lately.  After his brilliant performance Williams once again called out Trout before confronting him ringside.  That is a fight fans want to see and one that will tell us a lot about Williams.  That card started with a brawl between Moises Flores and Luis Cusolito and was won by Flores in the 10th round.  Flores had Cusolito hurt and the fight was stopped, probably prematurely, giving Flores the victory.

  • The last, and best fight of the weekend came late Saturday night when Juan Francisco Estrada took on Hernan "Tyson" Marquez.  Estrada dominated Marquez and dropped him a total of seven times before finally knockout him out in the 10th round.  In the fight Marquez was down twice in the 6th, twice in the 7th, once in the 9th, and twice in the 10th.  It was a performance that should remind fans that Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez isn't the only dominant little man in the sport, and hopefully it will set up a rematch between Estrada and Gonzalez soon.
