Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It wasn't the busiest week for boxing but there was plenty of action to give boxing heads their much needed fix.  The week's action kicked off on Tuesday when Sammy Vasquez, the fast rising prospect and growing fan favorite, took on Jose Lopez on Fox Sports 1.  Vasquez dropped Lopez twice in the 5th round, the second of which ended the fight.  The young fighter is showing himself to be very exciting and he clearly knows how to close the show, now he just needs to step up his level of competition.

  • On Friday young prospect Jeffrey Fontanez took on Marvin Quintero on Estrella TV.  Fontanez was ahead on two of the judges scorecards, while the third judge had it even in a very close fight.  Quintero was a good test for the young Fontanez but the young fighter would fail that test.  In the 5th round Quintero caught Fontanez with an overhand left that sent the young fighter to the canvas like he had just been shot.  Fontanez would beat the count but was dropped again by a straight left hand a few moments later.  Another few power punches from Quintero forced the Fontanez corner to throw in the towel, saving their fighter from further punishment.

  • On Saturday there were two notable fights, the first being on beIN Sports Espanol.  That fight was between David Sanchez and Luis Concepcion and Sanchez's WBA interim junior bantamweight title was on the line.  While Sanchez showed a lot of heart in the fight it was clear that Concepcion was in control, especially after he dropped Sanchez in the 1st round then opened a bad cut near Sanchez's left eye.  That cut would play a big role in the fight as Concepcion went to work pawing at it so it would never stop bleeding.  With his vision impaired Sanchez ate a ton of leather from Concepcion throughout the fight.  In the 10th round both fighters were tired and Sanchez's face was a bloody mess but they still stood toe-to-toe and slugged it out.  Sanchez would eat a huge two-punch combination that sent him to the canvas and while he beat the count he was clearly in bad shape.  Instead of playing it safe Sanchez went to war and paid the price.  In the corner between rounds Sanchez and his team decided enough was enough and the fight ended, giving Concepcion the title Sanchez held only a few hours before.

  • The final fight of the week took place on UniMas and featured hot prospect Jose Felix Jr. taking on Marcos Jimenez.  The fight started off very fast with Felix getting dropped in the very 1st round only to come back moments later and drop Jimenez, a feat that puts round one of their fight in contention for Round of the Year.  However, after the opening round the action wouldn't be as exciting.  Neither man put in much work but it was clear that the more skilled Felix was getting the better of the action that did take place.  When the final bell rang Felix was awarded a razor thin unanimous decision victory.
