Weekend Wrap-Up

  • What a weekend of boxing it was.  There was plenty of action to give boxing heads their fix and the highlight of the weekend was the fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares on ESPN.  Santa Cruz moved up to featherweight for this fight and Mares was his toughest foe to date.  Things escalated quickly and Mares immediately got to the inside and tried to rough up Santa Cruz.  The rest of the fight would be much of the same except with Santa Cruz getting the better of the exchanges.  Santa Cruz ended up throwing over 1,000 punches and Mares wasn't far behind.  The difference in the fight seemed to be the height of Santa Cruz, that height allowed him to land the jab which picked off Mares on his way in throughout the fight and forced Mares to become more and more reckless throughout the fight.  When the scores were announced the fight went to Santa Cruz via majority decision and left fans wondering if the fight would end up being the 2015 Fight of the Year.  Although the fight was a clear Santa Cruz victory and rematch would certainly be welcomed.

  • The co-feature on the Santa Cruz-Mares card on Saturday night was also extremely exciting.  That fight was between the veteran Hugo Ruiz and upstart Julio Ceja.  Ruiz was able to control the action early and dropped Ceja in the 3rd round with a big left hook.  Ceja was in bad shape after that knockdown but was able to survive the round.  The 4th round didn't go much better for Ceja and Ruiz looked to be in complete control.  In the 5th round the fight turned on another left hook, this time from Ceja.  The punch floored Ruiz whose head snapped back and slammed against the canvas.  Somehow Ruiz was able to make it to his feet but Ceja pilled on the punches while Ruiz stuck on the ropes and forced the referee to jump in a stop the fight giving Ceja a wonderful comeback victory.  To date this card had to be the best that the PBC has put on since its debut.

  • Friday night also brought boxing heads some solid action on another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Showtime.  The main event of that card was a heavyweight bout between veteran Derric Rossy and the undefeated, but untested Trevor Bryan.  Bryan started off fast by dropping Rossy in the 1st round and it looked like the veteran wouldn't survive the round.  However, Rossy did survive and turned the tables on Bryan by being very aggressive and taking the fight to the young pugilist.  Yet it was age, or the Las Vegas heat in the outdoor venue that would ultimately doom Rossy who faded late in the fight.  Rossy showed a ton of heart but the young Bryan was too good that night and got a clear unanimous decision victory.

  • The opening bout of Friday's Showtime card was a 10-round affair between Juan Ubaldo Cabrera and Decarlo Perez.  Cabrera entered the fight with a perfect record but at 36 years old he hadn't faced many quality opponents.  Meanwhile, Perez entered the fight with a record of 14-3-1 but he proved on Friday that he was better than his record may have indicated.  The first few rounds of the fight looked good for Cabrera who got off to a hot start but eventually he seemed to be gassed and the younger Perez took control and handled Cabrera by the way of unanimous decision.
