Weekend Wrap-Up

  • On Friday night the 27-year-old Abraham Lopez added another win to his resume, running his career record to 19-0-1, with 14 of those wins coming by the way of knockout.  Lopez was impressive right from the start against Jorge Diaz, who he dropped in the very 1st round.  From that point on it was really all Lopez.  However, Diaz did show a lot of heart throughout the fight, something that he does often.  That made it all the more surprising when Diaz didn't answer the bell for the 10th round, giving Lopez the win.  Although it was surprising it was also smart considering Diaz was being dominated and has already been through some wars in the past.  Lopez still hasn't faced any big names but he is getting closer and closer with each fight.

  • Saturday night brought fans a tripleheader on HBO Latino.  Not much was expected from the card when it was announced but it couldn't have gone much better.  All three fights had plenty of action and each one ended before the final bell.  Tevin Farmer started off the night with an outstanding performance.  Farmer took on the heavy hitting Dualis Prescott but it was Farmer who looked like the power puncher, dropping Prescott three times.  The final blow came in the 8th round when Farmer landed a beautiful left hand to the chin of Prescott.  Prescott dropped to the canvas and the referee didn't even bother giving him a 10-count.  It was a beautiful punch that punctuated a great performance and that knockout will be in the running for Knockout of the Year.  On top of the win, that marks Farmer's 13th win in a row after a bad start to his career.

  • Also on that card was Manuel Avila, who moved to a perfect 18-0 with 8 knockouts after getting passed Yoandris Solis.  It was a good back and forth fight and while Avila was getting the better of the action Solis certainly had his moments.  Then the fight was stopped with Solis on his stool with a hand injury.  It was a shame the fight had to be stopped but Solis probably suffered a broken hand and it appeared that Avila would likely win anyway.  Avila is still very young at 23 years old but he looks to have a nice future in the sport.

  • When it finally came time for the main event it was Dmitry Mikhaylenko's turn to impress, and impress he did.  The Russian was in the ring with Johan Perez, a veteran in the ring.  The fight was all Mikhaylenko.  He was very aggressive and was able to make it a phone booth fight where he could stay in close and pound away at Perez.  Mikhaylenko really turned things on in the 8th round and started pounding away on Perez who looked like he was finished.  Finally after a series of wild combinations and many brutal left hooks the fight was waved off, a little late, but better late than never.  The performance made it all the more surprising that the perfect 20-0 record of Mikhaylenko only includes 9 knockouts.
