ShoBox: The New Generation Quick Picks

Trevor Bryan vs. Derric Rossy: Last weekend there weren't any notable fights and that void in action was felt by boxing fans needing their fix.  Luckily for those fans this weekend will have plenty to offer.  The action starts on Friday night with a new edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.  That card will be headlined by a 10-round heavyweight bout between Trevor Bryan (15-0, 11 KO) and Derric Rossy (30-9, 14 KO).  The fighters are nearly 10 years apart with Bryan being the younger of the two who is still looking to make a name for himself.  Bryan may have a good looking record but he has been facing off against a slew of sub par fighters while Rossy, who has never been able to reach the highest heights of the heavyweight division, has always faced quality opponents.  In his most recent fight Rossy was able to upset another prospect with a perfect record in Akhror Muralimov, so Bryan can be overconfident.  Bryan is a big orthodox heavyweight with a Larry Holmes type body.  And while Bryan likes to work his jab, that jab is nowhere near the jab that Holmes made famous so many years ago.  The young Bryan will often follow that jab up with a straight right hand but he too often pushes the punch and his hands are not very fast.  Another weapon in Bryan's arsenal is a left hook and while it can land with a thud it doesn't come in very quickly.  Also, like many young fighters Bryan has a tendency to head hunt and even on the inside he doesn't go to the body often enough.  One thing Bryan does have going for him is the fact that he should be sharp because he has had a busy 2015 going 3-0 with fights in April, May, and June.  Rossy's advantage comes in experience, especially against solid opponents.  Rossy is also an orthodox fighter and he only gives up an inch to Bryan.  Like Bryan, Rossy also has slow hands but his offense is much more varied.  Rossy will flick his jab out to score points and control the distance and he likes to pump the jab from his hip.  Rossy will also let go with an overhand right that he can land from a long distance.  However, the biggest difference in these fighters may be the fact that Rossy puts in work to the body while Bryan does not.  It is never easy to pick against a fighter with a perfect record, especially when his opponent has nine losses, five of which have come by the way of knockout.  But Bryan has feasted on sub par opponents while Rossy has always taken tough fights.  This will be a close fight with rounds that are hard to score but Rossy will come away the winner with a majority decision victory.

Juan Ubaldo Cabrera vs. Decarlo Perez: One of the other fights on Friday's Showtime card will be a 10-round bout in the super middleweight division.  That fight will feature Juan Ubaldo Cabrera (23-0, 15 KO) and Decarlo Perez (14-3-1, 5 KO).  Cabrera does have a nice looking record but he has not faced any top opponents and he is a 36-year-old who is a 10-year veteran of the sport.  In those 10 years Cabrera has only had one 12-round fight and has only fought eight fighters with winning records.  Perez is only 24 years old but his last two opponents are probably better than anyone Cabrera has faced, and Perez won both of those fights.  This will be a step up of sorts for Perez though because it will be his first fight scheduled to go 10 rounds.  Another bad sign for Cabrera along with the fact that he has been fighting for 10 years and is already 36 years old and has never had a high level fight is that there is no tape of him online.  That usually means that the fighter is probably not all that good and has been involved in many fights not worth watching.  What is known about Cabrera is that he is an orthodox fighter with solid power.  Perez is also an orthodox fighter and he is a very skilled offensive fighter.  Along with a strong right hand Perez also carries with him a thudding left hook that he will bang to the body on the inside.  Perez also throws a nice uppercut but he doesn't often use his jab and will often walk straight ahead behind a high guard until gets inside and can unleash his offense.  Despite some road bumps in his career Perez has looked better as of late and could be in position to give Cabrera his first career loss.  Cabrera is the great unknown in this fight but he has always fought low level fighters and while Perez isn't top shelf he is certainly not on the bottom of the barrel.  This fight may be close but Perez is the better fighter and he will get the unanimous decision win.
