Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest name in action this past weekend was Sergey Kovalev who fought on HBO.  The "Krusher" as he is often referred to was taking on the severely outclassed Nadjib Mohammedi.  Kovalev spent most of the 1st round feeling the awkward Mohammedi out and then in the 2nd round wasted no time going to work.  Kovalev dropped Mohammedi in the 2nd round and finished him off in the 3rd of a fight that was never really in question.  Next up for Kovalev could be a showdown with Artur Beterbiev in a fight that would certainly bring the action.  Also on that HBO card was a bout between Jean Pascal and Yunieski Gonzalez that put itself in contention for a mention as a Fight of the Year contender.  Gonzalez was a big unknown and had never faced a top opponent so it looked like Pascal might be in for an easy night, he wasn't.  Gonzalez was very aggressive early and never relented.  Pascal was able to do some nice work and land some power punches and even wobbled Gonzalez at one point.  However, Gonzalez was usually landing the bigger punches and had Pascal hurt a few times.  When the scores were ready most fans were shocked to see Pascal get the unanimous decision win.  This fight didn't do much for Pascal's career except possibly hurt it, although not greatly.  For Gonzalez the fight should earn him a big name because he brought the action and has a fan friendly style.

  • This weekend also had a PBC card featured on NBC Sports.  The main event was an intriguing bout between Beibut Shumenov and PBC's own analyst BJ Flores.  Neither fighter has ever been a true A+ type fighter and both were really doing battle to stay relevant, especially Flores whose has never been a very active fighter.  While Flores played the role of aggressor he could never quite catch up with the constant movement an awkward style of Shumenov who won the fight via unanimous decision despite being badly hurt late in the final round.  Also on that card was a pair of undefeated American prospects going head-to-head in Jordan Shimmell and Isiah Thomas.  Shimmell came into the fight with good power numbers and having never lost a round in his pro career.  However, the quickness and movement of Thomas proved to be too much and he won the fight wide on the scorecards to remain perfect as a pro.

  • Brian Viloria also found himself in action last weekend.  He fought a rematch with Omar Soto who he first fought in 2010 to a split decision.  Things were much easier for Viloria his time as he dropped Soto three times in the very 1st round to score the 1st round stoppage win.  That win was a huge one for Viloria and there are loud rumors that his next fight will be against Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin, David Lemieux Pay-Per-View.

  • Finalle over the weekend there were a few lower level fights on some of the Spanish language television stations.  On Telemundo Romulo Koasicha took on Guillermo Avila in a solid fight that wouldn't make it to the final bell.  Koasicha proved to be too good for Avila and finished him off with a 7th round stoppage win.  Then on beIN Sports Espanol there was a two-fight card with good action.  The main event was a bout between Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. and Cesar Juarez.  Sanchez was the much bigger fighter but was down early on the cards after having a point deducted in the very 1st round.  It was a rough type of fight and Sanchez was even knocked clear out of the ring in the final round with about 30-seconds left in the fight.  He was able to get back in the ring but the fight was over soon after with Juarez getting the unanimous decision win.  Also on that card was a fight between Moises Fuentes and Oswaldo Novoa.  It was an exciting fight where both fighters gave and took a lot of punishment.  However, Fuentes proved to be the better man that night when he caught Novoa with a left upstairs followed by a picture perfect straight right hand to the belly that dropped Novoa like a bullet and ended the fight in the 6th round.  That knockout will certainly find itself in contention for the Knockout of the Year.
