Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The highest profile fight of the weekend was the main event of the PBC debut on ESPN.  That fight was between rising star Keith Thurman and veteran Luis Collazo.  It was a fight that left many people wondering what the hell had happened.  The first bizarre twist was when Thurman appeared to be badly hurt by a Collazo body shot.  From that point on Thurman was satisfied to box off of his back foot and stick and move, while Collazo played the role of aggressor, a role that was supposed to be Thurman's.  The fight then ended with Collazo on his stool.  Collazo told his corner and the doctor that he couldn't see.  The reason for his impaired vision was a cut near the eye caused by an accidental clash of heads.  It was a strange ending which left some wondering what was happening and if the fight would be ruled a technical knockout or if it would go to the scorecards.  In fact it was a ruled a stoppage win for Thurman.  However it was a knockout and lately Thurman has done more slick boxing than heavy punching which is strange considering his heavy hands have brought him to where he is today.  Also during the fight Thurman was the only one who appeared to be hurt.  In his post-fight interview Thurman not surprisingly called out Floyd Mayweather.  While it would be nice to see a young rising star get a crack at Mayweather it isn't a fight that Thurman looks ready for yet.

  • Also on that ESPN card was a matchup of prospects in Tony Harrison and Willie Nelson.  Harrison was untested entering the bout but he was the favorite and the fighter who appeared to have the much higher ceiling.  Nelson was coming off of a loss and his status as a top prospect had taken a hit.  Harrison appeared to be in control for most of the fight and was putting in some good work even though he never had Nelson in too much trouble.  Then in the 9th round Nelson caught Harrison with an equilibrium shot off the top of his head and that was it.  Harrison struggled to beat the count and when he made it to his feet he stood in the corner and turned his back to the referee which then caused the referee to stop the fight.  Harrison may not have been happy with the decision but you can't turn your back to the referee if you want to continue.  After the fight Nelson called out a slew of fighter including Floyd Mayweather which was laughable.  Nelson won the fight but he lost nearly every round.

  • Over on HBO Latino there was supposed to be an exciting, evenly matched main event.  It looked like things were heading that way when the fight was abruptly stopped.  The fight was between Mauricio Herrera and Hank Lundy and it was pretty good while it lasted.  Early in the fight Herrera suffered a cut on his right eye that left a flap of skin hanging over the eye.  That cut caused the fight to be stopped and it was sent to the scorecard including the 5th round that had just started.  Herrera got the victory and while it wasn't very satisfying for the fans Herrera certainly needed something to go his way for once.

  • Finally over on beIN Sports Espanol the always exciting Donnie Nietes took on Francisco Rodriguez.  Nietes apparently hurt his right hand in the middle part of the fight but not even that could help Rodriguez.  The fight was never really in question and Nietes was able to roll to a wide unanimous decision win.
