UniMas Quick Picks

Alvarez is best known for being Canelo's brother
Ramon Alvarez vs. Richard Gutierrez: For those of you who are looking for something to do this Saturday besides eating hot dogs and watching fireworks the Spanish language network UniMas has you covered.  The network will put on a fight card headlined by Ramon Alvarez (21-4-2, 13 KO) and Richard Gutierrez (28-16-1, 17 KO).  The pugilists are scheduled to go 12 rounds in the junior middleweight division, and one of them, Gutierrez, is in desperate need of win.  While Alvarez hasn't lost a fight since 2012 going 6-0 with 5 knockouts Gutierrez has lost three fights in a row and 2-8 in his last 10.  Alvarez is an orthodox fighter who almost seems like a poor man's version of his brother "Canelo."  Alvarez has a pretty good jab and a nice looking straight right hand and he will occasionally throw uppercuts on the inside that can do damage.  One thing Alvarez does, just like his brother, is bang to the body with his left hook.  Along with those punches Alvarez will also throw his right hand overhand and that is a thumping punch.  Gutierrez is also an orthodox fighter but he is also somewhat of a one trick pony.  Often Gutierrez will timidly push his jab out, not looking to really score with it, but doesn't put anything behind it.  The reason that Gutierrez is a one trick pony is because all he usually does it wait to land his wicked overhand right.  Even though Gutierrez does have a solid chin, only being knocked out three times in 16 losses, but he does have 16 losses so he usually gets utterly outboxed.  If Alvarez doesn't win this fight it will only be because he gets caught with a Gutierrez overhand right that he doesn't see coming.  That seems very unlikely and Alvarez should have no problem dominating this fight on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Carmona has won three fights in a row
David Carmona vs. Warlito Parrenas: The co-feature for Saturday's UniMas card features two fighters, one who some fans may be familiar with, and one that most have probably never heard of.  The fighter some may have seen before is David Carmona (19-2-4, 8 KO).  The fighter that most people have probably never heard of is Warlito Parrenas (24-6, 21 KO).  They are scheduled to go 12 rounds for a vacant interim WBO junior bantamweight title.  Carmona is an orthodox fighter with a snapping jab.  He also has a quick right hand he can land from a safe distance.  One major problem for Carmona though is his defense.  He isn't a horrendous defensive fighter but he will take a lot of clean power punches upstairs.  Carmona does also posses a solid left hook though, although he can sometimes get a bit wild with his punches.  Parrenas is also an orthodox fighter and he is an all or nothing type fighter.  Usually a Parrenas fight ends with him knocking out his opponent as his 21 knockouts in 24 wins would indicate, or it ends with him being knocked out as his four knockouts in six losses would indicate.  The jab of Parrenas is a good one as is his left hook but his best weapon may be his overhand right.  This should be an exciting fight because neither fighter is top notch on defense and both should have to taste some leather.  Parrenas has the power advantage and the fact that Carmona gets caught clean upstairs so often will not help him out in this bout.  Parrenas may get outboxed at times but his power will be the difference and he will win this fight by the way of 7th round stoppage.
