Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Clearly the biggest fight of the weekend was Saturday's main event on HBO.  That fight, between Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas had plenty of drama when things were all said and done.  The fight was a good one but it was clear that Bradley was winning the majority of the rounds.  Coming down the stretch all Bradley had to do was not get knocked out and he would have himself a victory.  With under 20 seconds left in the 12th round Vargas caught Bradley with a devastating overhand right that had Bradley out on his feet.  The scene was reminiscent of how Bradley looked against Ruslan Provodnikov.  Vargas continued to attack while Bradley clinched, looking to make it to the final bell.  The fans at the Stub Hub center were going crazy when the 10-second claps rang out and referee Pat Russell made a terrible mistake.  Thinking the the 10-second claps were the final bell Russell stopped the fight.  Vargas thought he got the stoppage victory and immediately began celebrating, while everyone else was left looking confused.  After some awkward unsure moments the scores were announced and Bradley was declared the winner.  It was an awful night for Russell and Vargas has said he will appeal the fight in the hope that the outcome will be changed to a no contest.  There may not be another fighter in the sport who has worse luck than Bradley, outside of Mauricio Herrera that is.  Also on that HBO card was hot prospect Oscar Valdez.  Valdez won in easy fashion with a wide unanimous decision but he did show some holes on his defense.  Still, Valdez is highly skilled offensively and his temperament should make him a fan favorite.

  • Over on truTV Gilberto Ramirez was in action against Derek Edwards.  Ramirez put a beating on Edwards who looked like he was on the verge of being stopped multiple times.  As impressive as Ramirez looked, the heart that Edwards displayed was equally impressive.  The co-feature of that card featured Diego Magdaleno and Jose A. Gonzalez.  Magdaleno was controlling the fight when what was ruled a low blow (it was actually a clean body shot) dropped Gonzalez to the canvas.  Gonzalez rolled, crawled, and never made it to his feet.  Magdaleno was awarded the victory and it was an embarrassing performance for Gonzalez.

  • Over on Showtime, Dominic Wade took on veteran Sam Soliman and did not look great.  Wade got the split decision win but neither fighter was particularly impressive.  To be fair, Soliman is not an easy fighter to look good against because of his awkward style but Soliman did show that he has healed from the leg injury he suffered in his last fight against Jermain Taylor.

  • On CBS Sports both Dennis Hogan and Tony Luis got wins.  Luis is a talented fighter with quick hands and with the win he should be able to get a bigger name to face off against his next time on the ring.  Hogan won a close decision over Kenny Abril and he too should be in line for a bigger fight his next time out.

  • Finally on Fox Sports 1 Paul Mendez took on the tough veteran David Alonso Lopez.  Lopez made Mendez work for it, as he does to every opponent he faces, but Mendez won a clear decision.  To date that was probably Mendez's toughest opponent and he still needs a few notable names on his resume before people start talking about him.
