Weekend Wrap-Up

  • After a long layoff, so long that people wondered if he was ever coming back, Andre Ward got back into the squared circled on Saturday night.  Unfortunately Ward was relegated to fighting on BET, not exactly a network known for their sports coverage, but that didn't matter much.  Ward looked spectacular and showed absolutely no ring rust while taking on Paul Smith.  Ward opened up a bad cut near Smith's eye which forced the fight to be stopped in the 9th round.  Ward was removed from Big Time Boxing's Top 10 P4P Rankings after being inactive for more than a year not due to injury, but expect him back near the top in the next installment.

  • Saturday's PBC card on NBC had its share of hits and misses.  The hit was Errol Spence Jr., who took on Phil Lo Greco turned out a wonderful performance.  Spence is considered by many boxing heads to be the heir apparent to Floyd Mayweather, and on Saturday Spence showed he has all the skills to do just that.  The misses from Saturday's card came in the main event.  That bout feature Shawn Porter taking on Adrien Broner.  Porter won the fight by the way of unanimous decision but it was a fight that no one really won.  Porter often fights like a bull in a china shop and that is how he looked against Broner.  Broner didn't look much better, not being busy at all and constantly clinching for the first four rounds.  Broner's clinching became so frequent that referee Tony Weeks took a point away from him.  Weeks however did not leave the fight unscathed either.  Weeks, a veteran referee did a terrible job on Saturday and never got control of a fight that was ugly to watch and left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

  • The fight of the weekend was one that most people probably had to go searching through the channel guide to find.  Airing on Fox Sports 2 and Fox Deportes was a fight between rising knockout star David Lemieux and Hassan N'Dam.  Lemieux flashes his impressive power throughout the fight, dropping N'Dam four times and appearing to have hin on the brink of a knockout multiple times.  That knockout didn't come though.  N'Dam showed an unreal amount of heart and kept making it to his feet and fighting back and he even seemed to rock Lemieux a few times late.  This fight should get Lemieux a big name to take on but it also earned N'Dam a ton of fans and had boxing heads wishing that fights still went 15 rounds.  Dierry Jean also appeared on that card in a lightweight fight against Jerry Belmontes.  Jean looked dominant in that fight and should have some big fight going forward.

  • On Sunday CBS aired a special Father's Day boxing card and it was a big hit.  The main event of that card was a bout between Rances Barthelemy and Antonio DeMarco.  Barthelemy is a fighter on the rise and he dominated DeMarco in a fight that showed the rest of the junior welterweight division that he will be a tough fight for anyone.  The co-feature of Sunday's card had growing fan favorite Sammy Vasquez in action against Wale Omotoso.  It was a fun fight that saw both fighters have their moments but it was Vasquez who had more of those moments and he should now be on to bigger and better things.
