Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week's action started on Friday night with Erislandy Lara and Artur Beterbiev both fighting on a Spike TV card.  Lara easily handled opponent Delvin Rodriguez and it seemed that he was landing every punch he threw.  It was a dominant performance but one that won't win Lara many new fans.  While his punches were incredibly accurate he never stepped on the gas to try and stop Rodriguez, which he probably could and should have.  As for Beterbiev he continued his streak of stoppages, finishing off Alexander Johnson in the 7th round of their fight.  Beterbiev has been so good, so quickly that people are already talking about a fight with Adonis Stevenson.

  • Saturday things kicked off on HBO with top prospect Felix Verdejo in action against his toughest opponent so far, Ivan Nejara.  The two squared off in front of a mostly Puerto Rican crowd at The Theater at Madison Square Garden and put on a good show.  Verdejo didn't score the knockout but he did drop Najera twice on his way to a clear unanimous decision win.  In the main event two undefeated fighters in Nicholas Walters and Miguel Marriaga did battle but the fight was more subdued than most fans expected.  Walters did drop Marriaga in the 9th round and was able to win a wide unanimous decision to remain undefeated and set up a number of big fights.

  • Also on Saturday, WBC champion Deontay Wilder was back in action following the biggest win of his career against Bermane Stiverne in early 2015.  This time Wilder took on Eric Molina and dropped him three times before finally knocking him out in round 9.  Next up for Wilder looks like it will be Alexander Povetkin and a possible bout with Wladimir Klitschko is still down the line.  Povetkin is a dangerous fight for Wilder who loves to fight with his hands low.  While Wilder proved many doubters wrong against Stiverne, he can silence all of them with a dominant performance over Povetkin.  Also on that card was a fight between Jose Pedraza and Andrey Klimov.  It was supposed to be a close fight but instead Pedraza dominated every round and really announced his presence in the junior lightweight division.

  • The last notable fight of the weekend came from the Spanish language TV station UniMas.  The main event of that UniMas card was between Jose Felix Jr. and Yakubu Amidu.  It was a good fight that saw both pugilists get dropped in the 9th round.  Despite being dropped Felix was able to get the unanimous decision win, which was important for his young career.
