truTV Quick Picks

Gilberto Ramirez vs. Derek Edwards: It seems that boxing airs on so many television networks now that on any given weekend there are multiple fights across many different networks.  That will be the case this Friday when four networks have fight cards scheduled.  One of those cards will be on truTV and is being headlined by Gilberto Ramirez (31-0, 24 KO).  Ramirez is a talented fighter and people may forget that he is only 24 years old because he has looked so good.  While Ramirez has yet to take the next step up in his progression and take on top level fighters he has been facing a lot of tough veterans that have the ability to pull off the upset.  Friday night will be much of the same when Ramirez takes on Derek Edwards (27-4-1, 14 KO) in a 10-round, super middleweight bout.  Edwards is a quality fighter but he usually loses to the top fighters.  In his past 10 fights Edwards has gone 5-4-1, losing to fighters like Andre Dirrell and Adonis Stevenson, but scoring a brutal 1st round knockout of Badou Jack.  Ramirez last fought in early 2015 against Maxim Vlasov and while he did get the unanimous decision win, it was a close decision and Ramirez didn't really impress.  On Friday Ramirez will need to win and impress in order to get the the next level in his career.  Ramirez is a big southpaw with good power.  While Ramirez doesn't have fast hands he is an accurate puncher with a good jab and straight left hand.  Ramirez also likes to throw looping type uppercuts that can do damage.  Perhaps the best attribute Ramirez has is the fact that he is aggressive but never gets overly anxious and takes his time in dispatching his opponents.  As for Edwards, he is an orthodox fighter he doesn't look to do much besides land his monster overhand right.  In this fight Edwards will have to rely on his experience and the power in that right hand if he hopes to win.  Ramirez has been brought along at a nice pace and faced fighters who present problems but not enough that Ramirez isn't the favorite.  While Edwards has a decent chin it isn't great and Ramirez is going to control the action and slowly break Edwards down before stopping him in the 9th round.

Diego Magdaleno vs. Jose A. Gonzalez: The co-feature of Friday's card will have two fighters in action with only two losses between them.  They are Diego Magdaleno (27-1, 11 KO) and Jose A. Gonzalez (24-1, 19 KO) and they are scheduled to go 12 rounds in the lightweight division.  Both fighters lone losses have come against their toughest opponents to date.  Magdaleno lost his 2013 bout to Roman "Rocky" Martinez, while Gonzalez lost his only fight to Ricky Burns also in 2013.  Magdaleno is a southpaw who fights like he has more power than he actually does.  He is without a great jab but he does show a nice straight left hand and he bangs to the body very well with both hands.  Gonzalez is an orthodox fighter with a busy jab that doesn't do much.  Gonzalez will double and even triple his jab up but often times he just sticks it out like he is using it as a measuring stick but does nothing behind it.  When Gonzalez does throw other punches it is usually his strong yet awkward right hand.  The fighter with more power in this fight is clearly Gonzalez but he may rely on that power too much because he is not a busy fighter at all.  This fight should play out with Magdaleno being the busier more aggressive fighter while Gonzalez will look to pick his spots and land power punches.  Because Magdaleno will be so much busier and put in good body work he will win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.
