PBC on NBC Quick Picks

Robert Guerrero vs. Aron Martinez: The PBC makes its return to NBC this Saturday afternoon.  Robert Guerrero (32-3-1, 18 KO) who appeared on the first PBC card on NBC will do battle once again.  Guerrero will be taking on Aron Martinez (19-3-1, 4 KO) in a 10-round main event in the welterweight division.  While Guerrero may not be the top title contender he once was, every time he enters the ring action seems to follow.  Guerrero's last bout was a one-sided loss to Keith Thurman in a fight that saw Guerrero get dropped in the 9th round.  Yet Guerrero came back and showed a ton of heart in defeat.  Also in recent years Guerrero has earned fans by going to war with Yoshihiro Kamegai and Andre Berto, but he has to be hoping that he has an easier time against Martinez.  As for Martinez he only has two notable names on his resume and both of those names, Josesito Lopez and Jessie Vargas, handed him losses.  The fact that Guerrero is also a notable name doesn't bode well for Martinez.  Guerrero is a lanky southpaw with a good jab from the outside.  Along with that jab Guerrero also has an accurate straight left hand and when he decides to take things to the inside, which he does often these days, he flashes some of the best uppercuts in the sport.  When it comes to Guerrero's nickname of "Ghost" it seems strange these days considering he isn't very hard to hit anymore but luckily for him Martinez has absolutely no power.  Martinez is an orthodox fighter whose problem isn't only his lack of power but at times it is also his lack of punch output.  Martinez isn't the busiest fighter and he doesn't have much of a jab.  What he does have is a decent counter left hook and a nice straight right hand.  This fight may be close early as Guerrero warms up but once he is feeling good he should have no problem handling Martinez.  Guerrero won't get the knockout but he will get the wide unanimous decision win.

Jesus Cuellar vs. Vic Darchinyan: The co-feature of Saturday's NBC card will be a 12-round bout between power punching Jesus Cuellar (26-1, 20 KO) and veteran Vic Darchinyan (40-7-1, 29 KO) for Cuellar's WBA "regular" featherweight title.  Fighters from Argentina are known as aggressive power punchers and Cuellar fits that bill.  He is a southpaw with heavy hands and a stiff jab, that he can land upstairs or to the body equally well.  Cuellar also has a powerful right hook and a monster left hand and either punch can turn an opponents lights out.  The only real knock against Cuellar, and its a slight one, is that his defense isn't great because he tends to get a bit wild with his power punches.  However, because he is such a big puncher his defense hasn't been a real problem.  In the past Darchinyan may have been able to take advantage of that wild streak but he seems to be at the tail end of his career.  Over his past 10 fights Darchinyan has gone 5-5 with losses to Nicholas Walters, Nonito Donaire, and Abner Mares and two of his last three fights have ended with him being knocked out.  Darchinyan is also a southpaw and he has always had a very awkward style.  While Darchinyan doesn't use his jab very often his right hand is in constant motion, in a way used to distract his opponent.  That distraction helps set up his quick right hook and and heavy left hand.  At 39 years old and 11 years older than his opponent, this may be Darchinyan's last shot at winning a title, but he will have to get through a very dangerous opponent.  If this was the Darchinyan of a few years ago this might be a fight of the year candidate because both men would have given and taken a lot of punishment.  However, this isn't the Darchinyan of a few years ago and at this point after back-to-back knockouts, Cuellar is too young and too powerful for Darchinyan and Cuellar will win the fight via 8th round stoppage.
