CBS Sports Quick Picks

Dennis Hogan vs. Kenny Abril: In on of the busiest Friday nights in some time CBS Sports will also be airing a fight card.  The main event of that card will be a 10-round, junior middleweight bout between Dennis Hogan (21-0-1, 7 KO) and Kenny Abril (14-7-1, 7 KO).  Neither fighter has any notable names on their resumes and while both have recently faced some quality opposition they have both also fought their fair share of tomato cans.  Hogan is really the one to watch in this fight with his undefeated record coming in.  He is an orthodox fighter with a decent jab and he usually cuts off the ring fairly well.  Hogan also throws a decent straight right hand and he bangs a good right hand to the body.  While Hogan doesn't have much power, the power he does have comes from his overhand right, but he also has a quick left hook that can catch opponents by surprise.  Across the ring from Hogan will be Abril in his southpaw stance.  Abril has quick reflexes and a nice looking straight left hand.  While Abril also flashes a solid right hook and left hand his problem is that he gets caught clean way too often.  Abril has only been knocked out once in his career but he already has seven losses to his name and he is coming off a two-fight losing streak.  The last time Abril lost two fights in a row he went on to win three straight, while he would like to make that happen again it won't.  Hogan is the higher caliber of fighter and he will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Tony Luis vs. Edward Valdez: The co-feature of Friday's card will be what one fighter hopes is nothing more than a tune-up fight.  That fighter is Tony Luis (19-3, 7 KO) who is coming off of a loss to Derry Matthews in Matthew's hometown following perhaps the biggest win of his career over the undefeated prospect Karl Dargan.  Luis will look to get back to his winning ways when he takes on Edward Valdez (13-10-2, 10 KO).  The two prizefighters are scheduled to go 10 rounds in the lightweight division and since the division is so wide open a win for Luis could help him make some moves up the ladder.  Luis is an orthodox fighter with very fast hands that allow him to double and sometimes triple up his solid jab.  Luis doesn't  bring much power to the ring but he does put a lot behind his sometimes wild left hook, and that punch can do some damage on occasion.  The fast hands of Luis also allow him to land a lot of punches to the body at close range where he usually fights behind a very tight guard.  As for Valdez there is no tape of him online which usually indicates a fighter isn't all that good.  One interesting thing to note is that Luis and Valdez, who is an orthodox fighter, have two common opponents, Karl Dargan and Ivan Redkach.  Luis beat Dargan by the way of unanimous decision but lost a close unanimous decision to Redkach.  Valdez lost to Dargan when he didn't answer the bell to start the 3rd round and he also lost a close unanimous decision to Redkach.  This is clearly a tune-up fight for Luis and as long as he doesn't get caught with a punch he doesn't see he will win this fight with a wide unanimous decision.
