Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The action was electric on HBO on Saturday night.  The main event of that card was a bout between knockout artist Gennady Golovkin and slick boxer Willie Monroe Jr. who earned his title shot the hard way.  It became apparent early on that Monroe was in for a long night.  Monroe was dropped twice by Golovkin in the 2nd round and it looked like the fight would end right there, but it didn't.  Monroe showed a lot of heart and was able to catch Golovkin with some very crisp head snapping punches.  When asked about those punches Golovkin implied that he simply let Monroe hit him because he knew he would win and wanted to give the fans a good show.  Well Golovkin did win by 6th round stoppage and the arean was going nuts chanting his name.  Golovkin hasn't yet faced a top opponent but he has fans buzzing regardless and is must see tv.

  • The co-feature of HBO's card was headlined a fighter who may be better than Gennady Golovkin and his name is Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez.  Gonzalez made his HBO debut on Saturday and did not disappoint.  He took on veteran Edgar Sosa who is a very good fighter in his own right, yet on Saturday he was no match for the man who may be the best offensive fighter in the sport.  Gonzalez dropped Sosa three times in the 2nd round, forcing the referee to stop the fight.  It was a performance that had the boxing world buzzing and opened a lot of eyes of people who had never witnessed the greatness that is "Chocolatito."

  • On Friday night truTV put on another boxing card and it was a good one.  At only 23 years old Jose Benavidez Jr. beat Jorge Paez Jr. and proved that he is ready for bigger things.  Benavidez still needs to improve defensively and can't spend so much time with his back against the ropes as he continues to face better fighters, but offensively he is very talented and he looks like he will be around for a long time.  Also on that card was a bout between Antonio Orozco and Emmanuel Taylor.  Orozco was looking to prove he could beat a name fighter while Taylor was trying to earn a big name fight.  Well Orozco was able to achieve his goal in a close fight that was fun to watch.  Both Orozco and Taylor should find themselves on tv again very soon.

  • Also on Friday was the second to last episode of Friday Night Fights.  The series is coming to an end but before it could go Reynaldo Ojeda, an undefeated prospect, had a great performance.  Ojeda beat Monty Meza Clay by a wide unanimous decision.  While Ojeda is still a prospect it was the type of performance that has graced Friday Night Fights so frequently over the years, a young hungry fighter rising to the occassion.  It was a pleasure to watch and one reason the series will be missed by so many boxing heads.
