Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The highlight of the weekend was a very short and very brutal fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and James Kirkland.  Kirkland who was without trainer Ann Wolfe for only the second time in his career was dropped early in the 1st round but survived and showed a lot of heart.  Then in the 3rd round Kirkland got dropped twice, with the second knockdown ending the fight and looking like it detached Kirkland's spirit from his body.  The knockout is a sure Knockout of the Year candidate and it was also a bad loss for Kirkland who know must know he needs Wolfe in his corner.  For Alvarez it was probably the most impressive win of his career and could set up a big money fight with Miguel Cotto.  Some people thought Alvarez looked so good that he now deserves a rematch with Floyd Mayweather despite losing every second of every round in their first go around.

  • CBS aired another PBC card on Saturday afternoon and fans were treated to two good fights.  The first was a bout between Japan's Tomoki Kameda and Jamie McDonnell from the U.K. and it was close for all 12 rounds.  At the end of the fight it was McDonnell who got a decision that could have gone either way and he probably won the fight based off his excellent 12th round.  In the main event hometown hero Omar Figueroa went toe to toe with Ricky Burns for nearly all of their 12-round fight.  As of now that bout is a Fight of the Year Candidate and it had a tremendous amount of phone booth action.  The only letdown from the fight was having to watch referee Laurence Cole make a mockery of the sport with his ineptitude, highlighted by the fact that he took two points away from Burns for holding when it was not called for.

  • There were also a trio of fights on Friday night with action on truTV and Friday Night Fights.  On truTV local New York area fighter Seanie Monaghan got a nice win over a solid opponent and should now be on to bigger and better things, even if that doesn't mean a title fight just yet.  Then in the main event Glen Tapia entered the ring with nearly everyone in the arena pulling for him since he grew up about 10 minutes away.  Tapia looked sluggish against the relatively unknown Michel Soro who stopped the hometown fighter in the 4th round.  That is the second brutal beating Tapia has taken in as many years and he will need to take a long layoff before he even thinks about stepping back into a ring.  Over on Friday Night Fights the action wasn't as exciting as expected by Amir Mansour was able to come away with the win and keep his contender status in check.

  • The action kicked off for the week on Thursday night with Manuel Avila in action on one of Golden Boy's L.A. Fight Club cards.  Those cards have featured a lot of young Mexican and Mexican-American talent and Avila was able to show that talent off by cruising to a wide unanimous decision win.
