truTV Quick Picks

Tapia scores another stoppage victory
Glen Tapia vs. Michel Soro: Now in his fourth fight under legendary trainer Freddie Roach, Glen Tapia (23-1, 15 KO) looks continue his impressive streak.  Tapia will be headlining Friday nights truTV card from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.  It will be a home fight for Tapia who is from Passaic, N.J. and he should have plenty of supporters in the stands.  Tapia will be taking on Michel Soro (25-1-1, 15 KO) in a 10-round bout in the junior middleweight division.  Under Roach, Tapia has gone 3-0 with three stoppages, a record he will look to run to 4-0 on Friday night.  Tapia is an orthodox boxer-puncher with a decent jab he uses to set up his heavy right hand.  Tapia also carries a nice left hook into the ring and will land solid uppercuts on the inside but his money punch is the right hand.  While Tapia isn't great defensively he does have a ton of heart, an attribute he showed off against the brutal James Kirkland when they fought back in 2013.  His opponent Soro isn't very well known in the United States.  Soro has spent most of his career fighting in his native France and his only fight in the U.S. ended in a draw against prospect Antoine Douglas.  Soro is also an orthodox fighter and he will enter the ring on Friday night with the quicker hands.  Soro has a busy jab that works well for him and he also has a nice short left hook.  Soro also throws a right hand, although it isn't a punch he finds much success with.  On paper this looks like an even fight, but boxing doesn't take place on paper.  The fighter with the higher ceiling is Tapia and he will get the job done and win this fight by the way of 8th round stoppage.

Monaghan should have plenty of fans on hand
Seanie Monaghan vs. Cleiton Conceicao: Another fighter who will basically be fighting with a home field advantage on Friday night will be New York based Seanie Monaghan (23-0, 15 KO).  Monaghan will be challenged by Brazilian veteran Cleiton Conceicao (20-6-2, 16 KO) in a 10-round, light heavyweight bout.  Monaghan is one of those fighters who has looked great on the local scene but hasn't yet made the jump to the national scene.  At 33 years old and undefeated, now seems like the time for Monaghan to make his move if he ever wants to fight at a higher level.  Monaghan is an orthodox fighter with a solid jab and a good right hand.  Along with those punches Monaghan also likes to bang a left hook to the body, and while he doesn't do anything elite, he does seem to do everything pretty well.  As for Conceicao, he is a Brazilian fighter and they aren't know for being elite fighters.  Certainly some Brazilians have found success in the sport but it isn't easy to find good competition there and many potential fighters chose to go the MMA route.  Conceicao is an orthodox fighter who has a tentative jab and often finds himself being backed up by his opponents.  His crooked punches both come in wildly whether it is his left hook or right hand and if Monaghan stays patient he could really make Conceicao pay for those wide punches.  For Monaghan and his fans they hope this will finally be his breakout fight.  The fight will be on free TV and an impressive performance could finally get him a big name fight.  Conceicao has been knocked out three times in his six losses and doesn't like taking punishment to the body.  Monaghan should look very strong in this fight as he breaks down Conceicao on his way to a 6th round stoppage.
