PBC on truTV Quick Picks

Jose Benavidez Jr. vs. Jorge Paez Jr.: This Friday night the PBC will return to truTV where there have already been some exciting fights.  This week young, rising prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. (22-0, 15 KO) will be taking on Jorge Paez Jr. (38-5-2, 23 KO) in a 12-round bout for Benavidez's WBA interim junior welterweight title.  Benavidez won that title by beating Mauricio Herrera in a fight that most viewers saw going Herrera's way.  That happens sometimes in boxing when you are the hot prospect with the big promoter, you get the win if its a close fight.  Herrera was Benavidez's toughest opponent and also his first 12-round bout after only going 8 rounds once, and never going 10 rounds.  As for Paez he has been fighting 10-round bouts for a long time now and has wins over Omar Chavez and Jose Luis Castillo but hasn't looked great as of late.  Paez is 1-1-1 in his past three fights, losing to the faded Vivian Harris, scoring a draw against the average Aaron Herrera, and finally getting a win over Ronald Montes.  Benavidez is a tall, lanky fighter who goes to work out of the orthodox stance.  He has quick hands and a nice long jab to go along with a very explosive straight right hand.  Benavidez will also throw a quick left hook, but his right hand is his money punch.  Defensively Benavidez isn't great and he will often spend too much time on the ropes where he takes a lot of punishment to the body.  Paez is also an orthodox fighter and he is much shorter and compact than his opponent.  Paez will be giving up 4-inches in the ring and his style reflects that difference.  While Benavidez throws long stinging punches, Paez throws short compact ones that land heavier.  The jab of Paez is only decent but his straight right hand is slightly better, the best punch from the Mexican fighter is his left hook to the body, a punch he can use often against Benavidez.  This should be a good fight where Benavidez tries to keep Paez at the end of his jab while Paez tries to get inside and kill the body.  Because of his significant height advantage and the lesson he had to take away from his fight with Herrera, Benavidez will win this fight by the way of majority decision.

Antonio Orozco vs. Emmanuel Taylor: The co-feature of Friday's truTV card should be an explosive one.  It features heavy hitters in Antonio Orozco (21-0, 15 KO) and Emmanuel Taylor (18-3, 12 KO) going head to head.  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior welterweight division, and should provide fans with plenty of action.  While Orozco is undefeated he has never faced a top opponent and in his last fight he handled Steve Forbes, a man who probably should have retired years ago.  As for Taylor he has faced some quality opponents as of late in Victor Cayo, Chris Algieri, Karim Mayfield, and most recently Adrien Broner.  Taylor looked good against Broner and gave him a good fight until being dropped with a beautiful uppercut in the final minutes of round 12.  Orozco is an orthodox fighter with a style best described by using his nickname "relentless."  Orozco likes to fight on the inside and doesn't use his jab often.  Instead Orozco relies on left hooks and good right hands whether he throws them straight or overhand.  Taylor is also an aggressive orthodox fighter and unlike Orozco, he actually has a fairly effective jab.  Taylor also lands a nice straight right hand pretty often and his left hook is a good one.  The difference in this fight may be experience.  Taylor has been in the ring with much tougher competition lately and those are the type of fights that make a prizefighter better.  This would be a close, even fight throughout but it will be Taylor who gets the win via majority decision.
