Weekend Wrap-Up

  • On Saturday night on HBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko put his supremacy on the line against the unbeaten Bryant Jennings.  Most people Klitschko to easily handle Jennings and knock him out at some point.  Instead what happened was a closer than expected fight that went the distance.  In the past year the heavyweight division has slowly begun to pick up some intrigue and this fight will only add to that.  Now Klitschko looks like a fighter who is on the decline and who may be vulnerable to a big, young challenger.  As for Jennings he certainly gained some fans and raised his profile within the division and should give a good fight to anyone in it.  Let's be clear, Klitschko easily won the fight, but Jennings has only been a pro for six years and is still getting better.  It may not happen right away, but a rematch down the line wouldn't be out of the question.

  • Also on HBO was rising contender Sadam Ali and he remained undefeated with a win over the tough Francisco Santana.  It was a good fight with some back and forth action but Ali controlled the distance and boxed well.  Santana is a tough fighter who certainly deserves to wind up on a few more televised fight.  As for Ali he is showing himself to be a skilled boxer, who at times, will stand a trade which makes for a fun night for the fans.  Ali also seems to get hit just enough to always make things interesting.

  • Felix Verdejo had his first 10-round fight on Saturday, and as expected, he looked spectacular.  Verdejo stopped his opponent, Marco Antonio Lopez, in the 5th round and he controlled every round of the fight.  Verdejo has blazing hand speed to go along with his serious power and he looks like he will be a surefire superstar a few years down the line, Puerto Rican fans are certainly counting down the days.

  • On Friday night the action was on Spike with a pair of cancer survivors in action.  In the main event Anthony Dirrell lost his title belt, and the first fight of his career.  He lost to a game Badou Jack in an extremely close fight that could have easily ended in a draw or with Dirrell remaining the champion.  It was a good win for Jack who suffered a 1st round knockout loss in 2014.  While Dirrell got the loss he is still a fun fighter to watch and shouldn't have to wait too long to find himself another big fight.  In the co-feature of Spike's PBC card Daniel Jacobs got himself a nice victory over former prospect Caleb Truax with a 12th round stoppage.  While Truax had his moments, Jacobs looked good and should be ready for a bigger fight very soon.
