Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Danny Garcia stays unbeaten after winning close, majority decision over Lamont Peterson.  The fight could have easily gone either way and there were many close rounds.  Garcia started off aggressively and was landing a lot of punches to the body of Peterson.  The first half of the fight it looked as if Garcia was getting the better of the action since Peterson was spending just a little to much time moving.  However, in the second half of the fight Peterson came alive and really took it to Peterson.  After the win, Garcia said he planned to move to 147 lbs. but would give Peterson a rematch.

  • The co-feature of Saturday's PBC card on NBC was a middleweight title fight between Andy Lee and Peter Quillin.  Like in the main event there wasn't a clear winner and the fight ended in a split decision draw.  Lee was dropped in the opening round and looked to be in bad shape but somehow survived the round.  Then in the 3rd round Lee was floored again but it was a flash knockdown and Lee had a good round.  Things tightened up in the middle rounds and Lee was able to drop Quillin, for the first time in his career, in the 7th round.  Fans would certainly welcome a rematch between these two fighters, and hopefully if it happens again Quillin can make weight so it really is a true title fight.

  • In the opening round of ESPN's Boxcino Tournament the heavyweights were a big disappointment, however, in the semi final round they really brought the excitement.  Favorite Andrey Fedosov was dropped in the 1st round against Lenroy Thomas but came back to score the 3rd round knockout.  The in the other heavyweight bout Donovan Dennis looked spectacular.  Dennis was in against the massive Razvan Cojanu who came into the fight in shape and looked good in the 1st round.  Then in the 2nd round Dennis landed a picture perfect overhand left on the chin of Cojanu and the fight was over with that single punch.

  • The junior middleweights were also in action on Friday in ESPN's Boxcino Tournament.  Favorite Brandon Adams looked good against Vito Gasparyan before forcing him to quit in the 7th round.  The reason Gasparyan stopped fighting is because his ear looked like it was about to explode and Adams did a nice job or targeting it.  Now Adams moves on to the finals for the second year in a row, this time against John Thompson.  Thompson entered the ring with an oil painting he did of President Barack Obama and got the win via split decision in an extremely close fight against Stanyslav Skorokhod.

  • Over on Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation, Frank Galarza remained perfect as a pro.  He beat Sheldon Moore by the way of 3rd round knockout in another good showing for the young fighter.  Galarza has gained a nice following in and around his hometown of Brooklyn, New York and he looks like he will be a fan favorite for awhile.
