Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The fight between lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and the man many consider to be the best light heavyweight in the world, Sergey Kovalev, just got a little closer to happening.  That is because Stevenson took care of business on Saturday afternoon against the tough Sakio Bika.  Stevenson dropped Bika twice in the fight, although he wasn't able to finish him off before the final bell.  Stevenson looked good in the fight but nowhere near great and was rocked on a few occasions from wild Bika punches.  If the fight does happen it looks like Kovalev will be the clear favorite.

  • It is official, Artur Beterbiev is a beast.  Beterbiev moved to 8-0 with 8 knockouts after his destruction of Gabriel Campillo.  Beterbiev dropped Campillo in the very first round and Campillo went into survival mode after that.  Campillo, a former champion, spent most of the fight with his earmuffs on hoping not to get rocked while he reluctantly threw his jab.  He was no problem at all for the stronger Beterbiev who looks like he is ready for some big things in 2015 and 2016.

  • Despite a 1st round knockdown on Friday Night Fights, Petr Petrov was able to cruise to a clear victory over Gamaliel Diaz.  Petrov was clearly the better fighter and dropped Diaz in the 7th round.  Late in the fight Diaz looked like he was ready to quit and kept complaining and turning away from the action, it got so bad at one point that referee Jack Reiss took Diaz to his corner to reprimand him.  The only disappointment of the night was that Petrov couldn't finish Diaz, but he looked in control throughout and should get himself a big fight soon.

  • Julian Ramirez looked great in his first ever 10 round fight.  Ramirez faced off against Raul Hidalgo and won every round on all three judges scorecards.  Ramirez went to the body extremely well and his straight left hand was unstoppable.  Ramirez looks ready for bigger things and he is the type of young, fan friendly fighter that Golden Boy is looking to build around.
