Showtime Extreme Quick Picks

Escandon will be looking to keep his title
Oscar Escandon vs. Moises Flores: Before the big names enter the ring on Showtime this Saturday night, there will be some action on Showtime Extreme.  That card will be headlined by Oscar Escandon (24-1, 16 KO) who will be bringing his WBA interim junior featherweight title into the ring against Moises Flores (22-0, 16 KO).  Escandon is an orthodox fighter, who likes to be the aggressor in the ring.  Escandon doesn't have a great jab and just uses it set up his crooked punches.  While the interim champion has a decent straight right hand it is really his left hook that is his best weapon, and he also throws a nice overhand right.  Defensively though Escandon isn't great and will often just put the earmuffs on until his opponent is done punching.  Flores, who is undefeated, will be looking to leave the ring with Escandon's title.  While Flores has a good record it has come against sub par competition and Escandon represents a small step up for him.  Flores is also an orthodox fighter, and he carries a strong left hook.  He also has a better than it seems straight right hand and he can land uppercuts when he wants to.  The problem for Flores is that he sometimes leans forward with his punches and gets off balance.  This fight is a pretty even one, Flores has slightly more power but Escandon has faced better competition.  It should be a close fight but Escandon will come away the winner with a majority decision win.

Chavez should have an easy night
Omar Chavez vs. Richard Gutierrez: Also appearing on the Showtime Extreme card will be the younger brother of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Omar Chavez (32-3-1, 22 KO).  Chavez will be taking on veteran Richard Gutierrez (28-15-1, 17 KO) in a 10 round, junior middleweight bout.  This bout has showcase fight written all over it considering Gutierrez is 2-8 in his past 10 fights and has only five wins in his last 20 fights.  Chavez is an orthodox fighter who isn't nearly as talented as his Hall of Fame father or older brother.  Chavez does have a pretty solid jab and his straight right hand is a nice weapon, but he doesn't have fast hands.  His left hook and right hand are solid, although they don't come in very quickly.  Also Chavez is not great on defense and usually takes his fair share of punishment.  Gutierrez is also an orthodox fighter, and he has a better than expected jab.  The veteran also has a nice left hook and a dangerous overhand right, and he will also have a huge advantage as far as experience in the ring.  While Chavez hasn't faced many top fighters Gutierrez has fought the likes of Gilberto Ramirez, Vanes Martirosyan, Luis Carlos Abregu, and Alfredo Angulo.  Unfortunately for Gutierrez, that experience also means he has been through some very tough fights and at this point he isn't anything more than an opponent.  Chavez may not be an elite fighter but he will certainly be good enough to be Gutierrez by the way of unanimous decision.
