Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It was a weekend of terrific performances and one of the best was turned in by Kell Brook.  It had been only six months ago that he as stabbed in the leg with a machete and on Saturday night he looked better than ever.   Brook dropped opponent Dan multiple times during the course of the fight before the fight was waved off after the 4th round with Dan still on his stool.  Brook seemed to be sharper than ever and his straight right hand couldn't miss.  Besides Brook's dominance this fight was also fun because it was a part of Showtime's new international boxing series which airs fights from overseas and on Saturday let viewers listen to the commentators on Sky Sports from the United Kingdom.

  • Gary Russell Jr. also made a big statement this Saturday by demolishing veteran Jhonny Gonzalez.  Russell Jr. dropped Gonzalez a few times before the fight was finally waved off in the 4th round.  Russell Jr., who has taken a lot of criticism over his opponents was coming off of a loss to Vasyl Lomachenko in a close fight and looked better than he ever has against Gonzalez.  Fans already new he had some of the fastest hands in the sport but now they saw what he can do when he actually sits down and his punches and exchanges.  Not only did last night showcase how talented Russell Jr. is but also showcased how incredible Lomachenko is.

  • The fight between Jermell Charlo and Vanes Martirosyan was an extremely close one.  Neither fighter even imposed their will on the fight and it was a back and forth affair.  It was one of those fights that probably should have ended in a draw but instead ended with a Charlo win.  Charlos is a talented fighter but his lack of power will be a problem because he isn't as slick as a Guillermo Rigondeaux, or Floyd Mayweather.  As for Martirosyan, this is a bad loss for him and he might need to go fight a prospect or two before he gets back to the high level fights he desires.

  • There was also a very close fight in the Friday Night Fights main event between Breidis Prescott and Fredrick Lawson.  It was a very close fight with Lawson looking better early and dropping Prescott in the 3rd round.  After a closer look though it appeared Lawson had just cupped Prescott behind the head and Prescott slipped.  The fight ended up coming down to that one ruling because Lawson won by the way of split decision, and that decision hinged on the one point difference for that knockdown that wasn't.  Had the slip been ruled properly the fight would have ended in a draw.

  • Juan Francisco Estrada also found himself in action this weekend and looked just as good as he always done.  He dominated every second of his bout against Rommel Asenjo.  Estrada looked like he dropped Asenjo but it was ruled a slip, not much action happened after that but Asenjo's corner threw in the towel.  While the timing was odd the stoppage was a good one, Asenjo had nothing to offer and was simply taking a beating.  Now fans hope to see a rematch between Estrada and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez.
