Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal saved what was an otherwise terrible night of boxing.  Kovalev and Pascal went to war in the main event and had the crowed on their feet for most of the fight.  Kovalev had Pascal badly hurt at the end of the 3rd round and looked like he would finish him off in the 4th, which he almost did.  However, Pascal showed a ton of heart and kept launching and landing a swooping counter right hand that did some damage to Kovalev.  The power punching Russian was able to get back on track though and badly hurt Pascal in the 8th round before slipping to the canvas.  While the referee was wiping Kovalev's gloves, Pascal was staggering around the ring barely able to stand.  Kovalev noticed how badly hurt Pascal was and was pointing to him and talking to his own corner.  Kovalev then pounced on Pascal, landed two heavy right hands, and the referee stopped the fight.  While the stoppage may have been a hair quick the fight was clearly over and Pascal was saved from a serious beating.

  • Also on that HBO card was Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov and Steve Cunningham.  In a terrible fight neither fighter really ever stepped on the gas but it appeared that Cunningham was putting in the better work and winning the fight.  Yet it was Glazkov who came away with the decision.  Clearly judges just love Glazkov because he also was a gifted a win from them in his fight against Derric Rossy.

  • Over on HBO Latino Francisco Vargas showed once again why he is such an exciting fighter.  Vargas loves to stand and trade and that's what he did with Will Tomlinson.  Vargas got the better of the action for most of the fight although Tomlinson did have his moments.  Vargas won the fight by the way of 8th round stoppage and was impressive doing so.

  • On Spike's first PBC card Andre Berto and Josesito Lopez tried to give fans a good show but were interrupted by a terrible stoppage.  In the 6th round Berto dropped Lopez twice and after the second knockdown the fight was waved off.  The problem was that Lopez didn't seem badly hurt and the second knockdown was really more of a result from the first one.  Also Lopez was ahead on all three judges scorecards when the fight was stopped without the referee giving him a count even though Lopez was already getting up when the fight was stopped.  Shawn Porter was also on that card and looked pretty good in a 5th round knockout win over Erick Bone.

  • As for that first PBC on Spike card, the commentating team was solid outside of former MMA fighter Jimmy Smith.  It wasn't that Smith did a terrible job but his MMA vernacular just didn't jive with boxing and his question of can you wave off a fight without even giving a count was laughable.  Spike also introduced cameras worn by the referee and trainers during the fight, while the camera angles were cool, everyone wearing the headband camera looked ridiculous.

  • Some other fighters who impressed this weekend were Antoine Douglas who stopped Thomas LaManna in the 6th round and dominated every second of the bout.  Fernando Montiel also completely dominated his fight with Rogelio Jun Doliguez and dropped him multiple times en route to a unanimous decision win.
