Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Cletus "The Hebrew Hammer" Seldin got the 5th round stoppage victory on Friday Night Fights this week, but his future still remains a question.  That question is whether Seldin is just an exciting club fighter or if he can actually be a title contender.  A few things Seldin has going for him are his power and fans.  Seldin isn't the slickest fighter and gets dirty at times but he has heavy hands and an aggressive style.  Seldin also has a large following in the New York-New Jersey area and you can bet they want to see him take that next step up in competition very soon.

  • Also on Friday Night Fights was a sloppy yet exciting fight between Raymond Serrano and Jeremy Bryan.  The fighters traded knockdowns in the early rounds but it was Serrano who came out the victor.  However, don't expect either of this fighters to ever compete for a world title.  Both have glaring flaws and don't seemed skilled enough to compete at that level.

  • Perennial title contender Pablo Cesar Cano looked impressive against a lesser opponent in Juan Carlos Abreu.  Cano's counter punching was sharp throughout the fight and he really put a hurting on Abreu.  The fight was never really in question despite Cano being buzzed in the final round and most of the drama came after the final bell.  It wasn't one judge seeing the fight as a draw that rose eyebrows it was also the fact that Abreu landed a monster uppercut on Cano after the final bell.  The referee got involved and was then shoved by Abreu who did a good job of not letting a fight break out when Cano confronted Abreu.  Luckily cooler heads prevailed and a melee didn't break out.

  • Over on Fox Deportes, Ivan Cano got a much needed win after has past two fights had finished in a draw.  He easily outpointed John Carlos Aparicio for a unanimous decision win but he has a very long way to go if he ever wants to contend for a title again.
