Telemundo Quick Picks

Vidal's career has fallen off the track recently
Jonathan Vidal vs. Ricardo Rodriguez: With three fight cards this Friday it is easy to overlook the one on Telemundo.  If you planned on watching all three cards but had to miss one certainly missing the Telemundo card would be your best bet.  The card is headlined by Jonathan Vidal (18-3, 10 KO) and Ricardo Rodriguez (10-2, 3 KO) and they are scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior bantamweight division.  Vidal is an orthodox fighter who at only 25 years old needs to get his career back on track.  In hist past four fights Vidal has gone 1-3 and was stopped in his most recent fight.  Vidal likes to be busy with his jab but doesn't put much behind it, and follows that punch up with a pretty good straight right hand.  Vidal actually puts decent work in when he throws combinations but he doesn't do that very often.  He has a short left hook without much power on it and a successful uppercut when he chooses to throw it.  As for Rodriguez, he is also 25 years old and is also fights out of the orthodox stance.  While he doesn't have much pop on his punches he does stay busy with them.  Rodriguez loves to throw punches in bunches and bangs to the body well with his left hook.  Rodriguez also has a nice uppercut on the inside and he has never been knocked out as a professional.  While Vidal may be the favorite in this fight it will be the busier Rodriguez who gets the close win by the way of unanimous decision.

Lipinets is gunning for a title
Sergey Lipinets vs. Cosme Rivera: In the co-feature of Friday's card will be a former kickboxing champion out of Russia by the name of Sergey Lipinets (5-0, 4 KO).  Lipinets will be taking on veteran Cosme Rivera (37-19-3, 25 KO) in a 10 round bout in the junior welterweight division.  Lipinets is on the fast track and wants a title shot very soon.  He turned pro in 2014 and has been perfect ever since, scoring a knockout in all but his professional debut.  Lipinets is an aggressive fighter with a nice up and down jab.  The former kickboxer also has a heavy left hook which he will bring to the body and a strong overhand right.  The problem for Lipinets going forward will be his defense.  He isn't a bad defensive fighter but at times he will keep both hands low and shoot punches from his hips.  That hasn't presented a problem yet but might going forward as he takes on better opponents.  While Rivera is no top opponent he does have some pop on his punches.  Rivera also has a huge experience advantage and has been in the ring with Zab Judah, Andre Berto, and Alfredo Angulo, although he did lose all of those fights.  Recently Rivera has hit hard times and is 4-5-1 in his past ten fights.  Rivera is an orthodox fighter with a long jab and a nice overhand right.  His problem is that he doesn't get back into a defensive position very quickly after he throws a power punch.  The one punch that Rivera can win a fight with is his right hand which is a pleasure to watch when he throws it short on the inside.  That right hand is really the only punch Lipinets needs to watch out for and he should be able to handle Rivera fairly easily, especially since Rivera has retired in his corner in two recent bouts.  Lipinets may take a few rounds to warm up but he will eventually win the fight via 7th round stoppage.
