Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Prescott is in dire need of a victory
Breidis Prescott vs. Fredrick Lawson: Usually, as its name would indicate, Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 airs on Friday nights.  This week however it will air on Thursday night and kick off what should be a very exciting weekend of boxing.  The main event of Thursday nights card should be an absolute slugfest when Breidis Prescott (27-6, 20 KO) takes on the undefeated Fredrick Lawson (23-0, 20 KO) in a 10 round welterweight bout.  Prescott is 6-4 in his past ten bouts and is coming off of a loss to Roberto Garcia in his most recent fight.  His opponent Lawson has never lost a fight but he has also never faced any top opponents.  When it comes to Prescott the welterweight division has been hit or miss for him and he really was at his best as a lightweight and junior welterweight so he can get worn down by physically larger opponents.  The orthodox Prescott would be better served if he used his jab more because it is a quality punch for him.  Most of his success however has come from his heavy right hand and deadly left hook.  Lawson is also an orthodox fighter but he is not a very busy one.  Lawson likes to pick his spots to land his powerful left hook and wild right hand and rarely uses a jab.  Defensively Lawson is the type of fighter who just puts on the earmuffs and walks forward and he may get exposed doing that against Prescott.  While Prescott is certainly not a A-level fighter he has had a lot of experience against top tier opponents while Lawson has fought eleven fighters who had never won a fight.  That experience will be the difference in this fight and as long as Prescott can avoid the power of Lawson he should be able to cruise to a unanimous decision victory.

Barthelemy will look to remain perfect as a pro
Rances Barthelemy vs. Angino Perez: The co-feature on Thurday's card could also be a very fun one.  It features slick boxer Rances Barthelemy (21-0, 12 KO) going up against the heavy handed Angino Perez (18-6, 16 KO) in a 10 round bout in the junior welterweight division.  This fight should be interesting because Barthelemy will be moving up from the junior lightweight division and he may have a hard time handling the power of Perez.  Barthelemy is an orthodox fighter who moves well in the ring and shows good patience.  He has a very good up and down jab along with an accurate straight right hand.  Barthelemy also has a nice left hook which comes in very short and crisp.  As for Perez, he is a dangerous puncher but only against sub par competition.  In his past five bouts he has gone 3-2, losing to quality fighters Ashley Theophane and Karl Dargan and beating fighters with records of 0-10, 0-9, and 2-65.  One thing Perez does have going for him is a heavy overhand right, but that won't be enough to beat Barthelemy who will easily handle Perez and win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.
