Fox Sports 1 Quick Picks

Alfonso Gomez vs. Yoshihiro Kamegai: Friday's main event over on Fox Sports 1 should be a fun one.  That fight will have Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12 KO) going up against Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22 KO) in a 10 round, junior middleweight bout.  It should be a fan friendly fight considering both fighters like to come forward and let their hands go.  Gomez has a lot of experience against top fighters in recent years, going up against and losing to Shawn Porter and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.  Gomez has also been in the ring with the likes of Miguel Cotto and the late great Arturo Gatti.  While Gomez has fared well against top fighters who are passed their primes he usually loses his step up fights against guys still in their primes.  Following back to back losses Gomez got a win against Ed Paredes but he had to get up of the canvas twice to do so.  Gomez is am aggressive fighter who fights out of the orthodox stance.  He likes to come forward behind a good jab and straight right hand but his best punch is probably his left hook.  Gomez also has a good uppercut, although he doesn't throw it nearly enough.  Gomez's chin is not a good one although his head movement can make opponents miss.  That weak chin of Gomez might be exposed against Kamegai who has knocked out plenty of opponents.  Most fans know Kamegai from his brutal fight against Robert Guerrero in 2014 that earned Big Time Boxing's honorable mention for Fight of the Year.  Kamegai is an orthodox fighter who likes to do battle on the inside.  While Kamegai has a nice left hook he uses his right hand more often and when he lets it go he does so with bad intentions.  One thing Kamegai has is a very good chin and that should come in handy in this fight that should see both fighters take some punishment.  This will be a very close fight but the power of Kamegai will be the difference as he could put together a few 10-8 rounds on his way to a unanimous decision win.

Ronny Rios vs. Sergio Frias: The co-feature of Friday's card will feature two young fighters who really need a win.  Ronny Rios (23-1, 10 KO) who is coming off of a loss to Robinson Castellanos will be taking on Sergio Frias (16-4-2, 8 KO) who at only 23 years old already has too many losses on his resume.  The two prizefighters are scheduled to go 10 rounds in the featherweight division and a win, at least for Rios, will put him right back in the mix in that division.  Rios is an orthodox fighter he has quick hands he uses to land a nice jab and straight right hand combination.  Along with those punches Rios also has a pretty nice left hook and can land uppercuts successfully on the inside.  The big question going forward for Rios will be how his chin can stand up to the best his division has to offer since it did not look very strong against Castellanos.  As for Frias his 4-loss resume is even more eye opening when you look at his opposition.  Frias has a loss to a 9-6-1 fighter and also has fought to a draw against a 5-10-2 fighter.  Even the wins of Frias come with question marks considering the low level of opposition he has faced.  Frias is also an orthodox fighter and he likes to counter with a nice left hook.  That left hooks is certainly the best punch of Frias who also has an undisciplined right hand and a jab that is decent at best.  The team surrounding Rios would probably not put him in with a killer coming off of a loss which is probably why Frias got the call.  Frias may have his moments with the counter left hook but this fight will be all Rios as he goes on to win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.
