Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It was a fairly predictable week of boxing with every fighter who was supposed to win doing just that.  It started out on Friday when Sergio Mora beat Abie Han but had a tough time doing it.  Mora was dropped in the 10th round and got the win by the way of a very close split decision.  Mora was supposed to fight Jermain Taylor for an IBF title but Mora does not look like a title contender anymore.
  • Another fighter who really needed a win was Vic Darchinyan.  He was able to get the stoppage win but he was also dropped in the fight and didn't look great against an opponent who is an average fighter at best.  The stoppage was an unusual one, Darchinyan caught his opponent who then took a knee, the referee knelt down next time him, never gave a count, and then waved the fight off.  Darchinyan still has something left in the tank but he will no longer able to beat the top fighters in his own division.
  •  This was really the week of fighters who needed wins to stay relevant.  Pablo Cesar Cano was one of those fighters and he ran through his opponent with a 1st round knockout.  Cano has fought for titles before and he could be on his way back to another title shot if he strings a few more wins together.
  • Power punching prospect Daniel Sandoval had an easy time with veteran opponent Grady Brewer.  Sandoval dropped Brewer twice in the 3rd round before the referee waved the fight off.  It was also a strange stoppage, the referee looked like he was trying to break the two fighters up after Brewer had been caught by a few punches.  Brewer went down, partially from a push, and partially because the ref was riding his back then the fight was stopped.  However Sandoval was lucky he didn't get disqualified.  In the 1st round Sandoval tried to throw a punch while Brewer was down and luckily for him the referee grabbed his arm and stopped him.  Then in the 3rd round Sandoval seemed to connect with a punch while Brewer was done but the referee either didn't see it or chose to ignore it.
