Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Gennady Golovkin once again won a fight before the final bell had a chance to sound.  Golovkin put a beating on the tough Martin Murray who showed a ton of heart in defeat.  Murray never stopped trying and caught Golovkin with a lot of clean punches but he just didn't have the power to hurt him.  Golovkin dropped Murray three times before stopping him in the 11th round but he showed that he could be touched up and the performance may actually help Golovkin finally get a big name fight.

  • Until this weekend ESPN's Boxcino Tournament has been a huge success.  Then came the heavyweights who stunk it up in the ring.  In the past the Boxcino Tournament has provided fans with young, hungry fighters and good action.  However this weekend the heavyweights looked sloppy and the fights that did end in stoppage looked incredibly one-sided.  The Boxcino Tournament has been a fan favorite but not when it comes to the big men.  Andrey Fedesov looks like the fighter to beat and scored the 1st round knockout and the only other fighter who looked anywhere near decent was Donovan Dennis.

  • One of the more exciting fights this weekend was a bout between Jorge Paez Jr. and Ronald Montes.  The fight only lasted 4 rounds and the action went back and forth throughout.  The 3rd round of this fight will be a fringe contender for 2015 Round of the Year but the real statement came in the 4th round.  In that round Paez Jr. connected with a gorgeous 3-punch combination that ended the fight.  Paez Jr. connected with a left hook upstairs, an uppercut with the left hand upstairs, and then finished things off with a vicious left hook to the body that took the life out of Montes.

  • Over on Showtime up-and-coming prospect Sammy Vasquez was in action.  He looked dominant over 12 rounds against Emmanuel Lartey and it looks like the time is now for him to step up his level of competition.  Vasquez isn't ready for a title shot just yet but he is an exciting fighter with good power who loves to kill the body and is definitely a fighter to pay attention to in the next few years.  Also on that card was an upset by Craig Baker when he stopped favorite Umberto Savigne in the 2nd round of their fight.  That win probably ended Savigne's run as a legitimate prospect, especially since both of his career losses have been by knockout.

  • Finally, over on Fox Deportes young prospect Horacio Garcia did what he was supposed to do.  He scored the 1st round knockout over journeyman Jose Torres when he caught Torres with a perfect overhand right that connected right on the chin, forced Torres to the canvas, and ended the fight.
