UniMas Quick Pick

Jorge Paez Jr. vs. Ronald Montes: With everything going on in the boxing world right now, including tonight's Gennady Golovkin fight, everything else is pretty much being overlooked.  That is certainly the case for tonight's UniMas fight scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division between Jorge Paez Jr. (37-5-2, 22 KO) and Ronald Montes (16-1, 14 KO).  Both fighters are really in need of a win with Paez Jr.'s last two bouts ending in a loss and a draw and Montes losing his most recent fight.  Paez Jr. is an orthodox fighter with quick reflexes.  He has a nice jab and a good straight right hand to back it up with.  Paez Jr. also likes to feint a lot and his best punch may be his left hook which he digs well to the body.  Defensively Paez Jr. is pretty solid and in his five losses has only been stopped once and that came back in 2007.  One other weapon Paez Jr. has at his dispense is an overhand right which he finds success with when he actually lets it go.  Ever since about 2011 Paez Jr. has been facing quality opposition.  The same cannot be said for Montes who opponents have a combined record of 60-70-4 and eight of those opponents were either making their pro debut or had never won a fight.  Montes is an orthodox fighter from Columbia and like many other Columbian fighters has good power but tends to be wild with his punches.  He uses his jab to set up a very strong straight right hand and that is the one punch Paez Jr. needs to watch out for.  The rest of the punches Montes throws are wild and looping, especially his left hook and because of that they are easy to slip.  Montes has a punchers chance, especially if he lands his right hand but it will be Paez Jr. who comes away the winner with a unanimous decision victory.
