Weekend Wrap-Up

- Talk about silencing critics.  Deontay Wilder not only won the first true test of his young career but he did so by outboxing champion Bermane Stiverne for 12 rounds to become America's first heavyweight champion since 2006.  Wilder showed he could box, take a punch, and he also showed good ring intelligence.  The sport has its newest star and his name is Deontay Wilder.

- Wilder's win wasn't just a win for him, it was a win for the sport.  Ever since Mike Tyson's career ended the sport has been looking for a new heavyweight star with crossover potential.  Wilder has the power to excite casual fans and he is already one of the best trash talkers in the sport.  He should be able to crossover to the mainstream and bring new fans and attention to boxing.

- Leo Santa Cruz stopped Jesus Ruiz but it was tougher than most people expected it to be.  Santa Cruz has said that he wants his next fight to be against one of the best meaning Abner Mares or Guillermo Rigondeaux and if he doesn't fight one of them next he will certainly lose a lot of fans who are already critical of his recent opponents.

- Amir Imam is a dangerous man.  He fought Fidel Maldonado Jr. on Saturday in a fight that featured five knockdowns.  Imam has speed and power and is certainly a fighter to pay attention to in 2015 in a crowded junior welterweight division.

- On Friday Night Fights one thing was clear; Bryan Vera needs to seriously consider retiring.  Chances are he won't ever find himself in another big fight on HBO or Showtime and he has taken a lot of punishment throughout his career.  The past year or so he has sounded a little more punch drunk and now his skills are seriously slipping.  He can still bang to the body but his hands are incredibly slow and his reflexes are shot.  Time to hang them up before he suffers permanent damage.

- Last years winner of ESPN's Boxcino Middle Tournament Willie Monroe Jr. looked very good against Bryan Vera on Friday.  Monroe Jr. is a skilled boxer but he can also put some pop on his punches.  It shouldn't be long before Monroe Jr. finds himself in with some of the better fighters the middleweight division has to offer.
