Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Hassan N'Dam vs. Curtis Stevens: ESPN2's boxing telecast is known as Friday Night Fights but this time the network will be bringing the action on Wednesday.  There have been a lot of Fight of the Year candidates so far this year and Wednesday's bout between power punchers Hassan N'Dam (30-1, 18 KO) and Curtis Stevens (27-4, 20 KO).  That fight is scheduled to go 12 rounds and will be an IBF title eliminator in the middleweight division.  Both N'Dam and Stevens are known as exciting toe to toe fighters so the action should be nonstop.  N'Dam was a former middleweight title holder who lost his belt to Peter Quillin in 2012.  That fight saw N'Dam get dropped six times but he still was able to make it to the final bell.  N'Dam is an orthodox fighter with a strong jab and left hook but that left hook will often come in very wide.  N'Dam also has a dangerous right hand which he digs to the body and he also throws a good straight right upstairs.  The problem for N'Dam is his defense which is obvious considering he was dropped six times in a single fight.  Across the ring will be Stevens who is also an orthodox fighter.  Stevens also comes equipped with a strong jab and has dropped fighters with that punch before.  He also has a devastating left hook that is a lot short than N'Dam's.  However defense is also a weakness for Stevens and he doesn't move particularly well in the ring.  In his last bout Stevens was being outboxed by Tureano Johnson for 9 and a half rounds until he caught Johnson with a left hook and ended the fight.  Stopping the tough as nails N'Dam won't be easy for Stevens and this fight could come down to knockdowns.  This should be a toe to toe battle and both fighters should give and receive a tremendous amount of punishment.  While N'Dam has never been knocked out he has been dropped many times and that will be the difference in this fight.  Stevens should be able to floor N'Dam a time or two which will give him the edge on the scorecards for a close majority decision win.

Fredrick Lawson vs. Ray Narh: The other fight on Wednesday's card should also be an exciting one and features two fighters at vastly different stages in their careers.  Welterweight Fredrick Lawson (22-0, 20 KO) will be in the ring with veteran fighter Ray Narh (26-5, 21 KO) in a 10 round bout.  Lawson's teams might see Narh as a shot fighter with a little bit of name recognition to put on his resume since at this point in his career it doesn't seem that Narh has much left.  He has gone 1-4 in his last five bouts including three straight losses.  Also in the five career losses Narh has suffered three of them have come by the way of knockout which doesn't exactly bode well against a power puncher like Lawson.  The advantage Narh does have is experience against better competition since Lawson has only really fought tomato cans and win less fighters and ten of his wins have come against a fighter without a number in the win column.  This will be an interesting fight because Narh hasn't looked good recently but he has plenty of power himself and he is also the more skilled fighter.  Lawson is an orthodox fighter who throws wide, wild punches and he doesn't always turn over his power punches.  He also takes a ton of clean punches and Narh still has some pop on his punches.  Also while Narh isn't anywhere near elite he is still better than anyone Lawson has faced.  Narh is also an orthodox fighter but throws his punches more shorter and moves around the ring better than Lawson does.  This fight will come down to power.  If Narh can handle the punching power of Lawson he should be able to counter the younger fighter because of his straighter, shorter punches.  While these fighters may not be very good this fight has a chance to be and it will be Narh who comes out ahead by the way of unanimous decision.
