Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Johnson couldn't finish his first 10 round fight
Tureano Johnson vs. Mike Gavronski: If Tureano Johnson (14-1, 10 KO) were a more seasoned professional he would probably still be undefeated.  Johnson lost his last bout to the power punching Curtis Stevens in the 10th round of a 10 round fight.  Johnson was outboxing Stevens and seemingly on his way to a unanimous decision win when Stevens caught him with a monster left hook that hurt Johnson.  Instead of tying Stevens up Johnson let himself be pushed back against the ropes and just put the earmuffs on.  The referee jumped in a stopped the fight and although the stoppage was questionable if Johnson had boxed smarter he would have come away with the win.  Still Johnson has the skills to move on successfully from that loss.  He usually starts fights off in the orthodox stance but can also switch things up and fight as a southpaw and he likes to be the aggressor.  Johnson doesn't have a great jab but what he does do very well is kill the body with hooks either the left or as a southpaw the right.  Along with those hooks Johnson has a sneaky good uppercut on the inside and on July 11th he will look to give Mike Gavronski (14-0-1, 10 KO) his first career loss as they square off for 10 rounds in the middleweight division.  While Gavronski is undefeated that is largely due to his absolutely terrible opposition and without a doubt Johnson will be his toughest challenge as a pro.  Gavronski likes to start fast and has a long jab with a very strong overhand right he likes to bring behind it although often times that punch will come in very wide which leaves him open to be countered.  The reason Gavronski may start so fast is because he isn't the most skilled fighter and certainly won't be outboxing anyone in the ring so he looks to make things rough on the inside from the get go.  It is pretty clear that Johnson is the more skilled of the two fighters and he should be able to outbox Gavronski and also pick his spots to really put a hurting on him.  I expect Johnson to get back on track after his questionable loss to Stevens and win this fight pretty easily by the way of 6th round stoppage.

Maicelo looks to get back to his winning ways
Art Hovhannisyan vs. Jonathan Maicelo: The other notable fight on Friday Night Fights will be a 10 round lightweight matchup between Art Hovhannisyan (17-1-2, 9 KO) and Jonathan Maicelo (20-1, 12 KO).  Hovhannisyan is a veteran of the sport and has a very quick jab out of his orthodox stance with a nice left hook to go with it.  Most of his punches are quick and compact but occasionally when he throws his straight right hand he will lunge in and get off balance, but when he gets in close he will throw that punch over the top with good power.  While Hovhannisyan and Maicelo have faced a similar level of competition they fight very differently.  Hovhannisyan is an agressive fighter who likes to come forward and throw power while Maicelo uses his feet much more.  Maicelo likes to use his footwork to make his opponent chase him and left stop and land a good jab and lightning quick right hand.  Along with his good footwork Maicelo also moves his head very well which frustrates opponents.  This fight really comes down to the movement of Maicelo against the aggressiveness of Hovhannisyan.  Maicelo's only career loss which was by knockout came against Rustam Nugaev who fights very similarly to Hovhannisyan which doesn't bode well for Maicelo.  However I have a feeling that Maicelo won't stand and trade as much with Hovhannisyan as he did with Nugaev and his movement will allow him to win a close fight via split decision.
