Fox Sports 1 Quick Picks

Gomez has shown plenty of power
Frankie Gomez vs. Vernon Paris: This Friday Fox Sports 1 will have a very intriguing 10 round junior welterweight fight between two highly touted prospects.  The younger of the two fighters is Frankie Gomez (17-0, 13 KO) who has looked impressive at only 22 years old.  Gomez will be challenged by Vernon Paris (28-1, 16 KO) who was one of the hottest prospects in the sport only a few years back before being knocked out by Zab Judah.  While Paris will be looking to keep his name relevant, Gomez will be looking to add another name to his hit list.  Gomez is trained by Freddie Roach and has shown a tremendous amount of power in his young career.  Gomez is an orthodox fighter who likes to walk down opponents and land heavy left hooks.  Gomez also has a nice stiff jab that he can do damage with and a right hand that comes in wide but is devastating when it lands.  One question still surrounding Gomez is his defense because he has never been in the ring with any top fighters that pose a true threat.  That will change on Friday night when Gomez takes on Paris.  Paris is also an orthodox fighter and he likes to stand in the pocket and trade.  He has a nice jab and good left hook to go along with a very quick straight right hand.  The problem for Paris has been his defense.  He doesn't use his feet very well and takes a lot of clean punches upstairs.  The chin of Paris is also a big question he was dropped by Tim Coleman and got stopped against Zab Judah.  If Paris ever hopes to be looked at as a top prospect with a real chance at becoming a mainstay in the sport he needs to look good against Gomez.  Both fighters in this bout have good power and don't mind trading punches so this could be a fun one for fans.  The difference will be footwork.  Neither fighter has great footwork but Gomez uses the ring more intelligently and has better power.  Paris may give a good showing of himself early but he will fade down the stretch and I expect Gomez to win this fight by the way of 9th round stoppage.

Morales looks to stay unbeaten
Ivan Morales vs. Sergio Frias: The Fox Sports 1 card will be a good one because it isn't just the main event that will feature top prospects.  The co-feature will also have a top prospect in action in the unbeaten Ivan Morales (25-0, 14 KO).  Morales will be in the ring with Sergio Frias (15-3-2, 8 KO) in a bantamweight bout scheduled to go 10 rounds.  Morales is a southpaw who at 5'7'' is tall for the bantamweight division.  He likes to use his height advantage by staying on the outside and popping his jab frequently and he moves around the ring well.  Morales likes to double up that jab and also is very good at throwing quick one-twos.  Morales has a very good straight left hand that is rangy and quick like his jab and he controls the pace and distance of fights intelligently from the outside.  His opponent Frias also has a nice jab but he throws it from the orthodox stance.  Frias also has a good straight right hand but he isn't as technically sound as Morales and tends to get wild, especially on the inside.  Something Frias needs to change is backing straight up on defense which is a good way to get knocked out.  Frias will probably do his best to get inside on Morales and make it a sloppy fight from the pocket.  For his part Morales will look to do what he does best control the action from a safe distance.  Morales is the sharper fighter in this bout and I expect him to look very good on his way to a wide unanimous decision win.
