Fox Sports 1 Quick Pick

Gomez is coming off back to back losses
Alfonso Gomez vs. Ed Paredes: Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, one of the most popular fighters in the sport will be in action on a July 12th PPV card.  That means the promoters and networks will roll out other cards to act as appetizers to the main event.  The first of those appetizers will be on July 9th on Fox Sports 1 with a fight between Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO) and Ed Paredes (35-3-1, 23 KO) in a 10 round junior middleweight bout.  Gomez will be the fighter with more experience against elite opponents and has wins over Arturo Gatti, Jesus Soto Karass, and Jose Luis Castillo althought Gatti and Castillo were both well past their primes.  Gomez has also lost all of his real step up fights against the likes of Miguel Cotto, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and Shawn Porter.  Gomez has always been a game fighter but he has also always been a B-level fighter.  The orthodox Gomez has a nice left hook and typically throws a lot of one-twos.  He is an aggressive, come forward style fighter and can make lesser opponents miss with their punches with his head movement.  One punch Gomez doesn't throw much of is his left uppercut but when he chooses to let it go it can be very successful.  On the 9th Gomez will be trying to get back on track after back to back losses against an opponent who hasn't faced any top tier opposition.  Paredes is younger than Gomez and has had more fights and while he has been in the ring with some solid veterans his resume is nowhere near the resume of Gomez.  Paredes is also an orthodox fighter and he has a nice strong jab and powerful left hook.  He also likes to be the aggressor in fights but doesn't use his feet as well as Gomez does.  One thing Paredes does better than Gomez is land with power.  Paredes throws a short right uppercut that has ended many of his opponents nights early and he carries that power into the late rounds very well.  This fight could go either way and it may come down to how fresh Gomez looks late.  If Gomez can avoid a lot of punishment in the middle rounds who should be able to use his legs late in the fight and box his way to a win.  However if this is a phone booth fight Paredes may be able to wear Gomez down and stop him late.  The smart money is probably with Gomez but his last two fights have been very tough against good punchers and he has been in many wars.  I think those past battles will show in this fight and Paredes will be able to hurt Gomez and wear him down in the middle rounds before stopping him in the 10th and final round.
