UniMas Quick Picks

Segura was sensational in his last fight
Giovani Segura vs. Felipe Salguero: Boxing fans will be lucky tonight because UniMas decided to air a fight card they weren't originally planning to.  The card is headlined by Giovani Segura (31-3-1, 27 KO) who is coming off an honorable mention for 2013 Fight of the Year against Hernan "Tyson" Marquez.  Segura won that fight via 12th round knockout and will now face off against Felipe Salguero (19-5-1, 14 KO) in a 10 round flyweight bout.  Segura is the type of fighters fans love to watch because he always makes good action fights.  He typically throws a lot of punches but he also takes his fair share of abuse.  Many of Segura's fights take place in a phone booth but he has more success when he fights from a distance.  While he is a good fighter on the inside his defense is better when he can attack from the outside where he throws many good combinations.  Segura isn't one to stick and move however, he is always the aggressor and never seems to take a backwards step.  Another reason Segura is loved by fans is because he is always in the ring with other top fighters such as Marquez, Jonathan Gonzalez, Brian Viloria, and Ivan Calderon twice.  While Salguero will be a slight step down from his last fight he could still make for a difficult night.  Salguero is also an aggressive fighter but his style is different from Segura's.  For one thing Salguero is an orthodox fighter while Segura is a southpaw and he doesn't throw as many punches as Segura does.  Instead Salguero works behind a jab to land single power punches.  Salguero has a good left hook and a very nice short right uppercut which could be dangerous for Segura on the inside.  Segura is the better fighter but this fight still should provide fans with plenty of back and forth action.  I expect Salguero to hang tough for awhile but Segura will win the fight via 10th round knockout.

Gonzalez Jr. will look to stay undefeated
Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. vs. Juan Alberto Rosas: Another fight on tonight's card also promises to be action packed.  It will be a 10 round bantamweight fight between Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (22-0-2, 14 KO) and Juan Alberto Rosas (38-8, 27 KO).  Gonzalez Jr. is only 21 years old and is definitely a fighter to watch out for.  He fights behind a high guard and a good jab and has above average power in both hands.  Gonzalez Jr.'s left hook is deadly and he follows it up with a heavy right hand that puts opponents to sleep.  He doesn't take a lot of punishment in his fights so it's still unclear how good or bad his chin is but fans should find that out soon if he keeps winning and taking on better and better fighters.  While Rosas isn't exactly elite he does represent a step up for Gonzalez Jr. and he has never been stopped.  That's what Rosas really is, a fighter who can give guys rounds because he is tough and has never been knocked out.  His best punch is his overhand right but that's really his only weapon.  Rosas isn't anything special defensively and his technique is very sloppy.  Gonzalez Jr. will clearly be the more skilled fighter in the ring but it will be interesting to see how he handles the sloppy, frustrating style of Rosas.  If Gonzalez Jr. is able to knock Rosas out for the first time it would be very impressive and would probably earn him another televised bout.  I expect Gonzalez Jr. to look very good in this fight and be the first fighter to ever knock Rosas out doing so in the 7th round.

Castillo's fights always end in a knockout
Misael Castillo vs. Aaron Herrera: UniMas did a great job of stacking tonight's card with a ton of action fighters and heavy hitters and the opening bout should be no different.  It features knockout artist Misael Castillo (26-2, 24 KO) squaring off against Aaron Herrera (25-3, 17 KO) in a 10 round junior welterweight bout.  Like many other power punchers Castillo doesn't have a high punch output.  He likes to pound away to the body when he does throw punches and fights behind a high guard.  Castillo's best weapon is his left hand which is very heavy and usually puts other fighters to sleep.  One flaw of Castillo is his weak chin.  He has two losses as a pro and both came from knockouts so he needs to be careful against Herrera who has some pop to his punches.  However Herrera also has a questionable chin and was knocked out in his last fight.  He tends to take a lot of punches and that will be very dangerous against Castillo especially since he has a bad habit and going straight back on defense.  Neither of these fighters is really elite and neither has blazing hand speed.  While Castillo's chin might be slightly worse than Herrera's his power is much better and that will be the difference in this fight.  I expect a lot of toe-to-toe action early in the fight until Castillo starts to find a home for his left hand and wins this fight by the way of 6th round knockout.
