Friday Night Fights Quick Pick

Ramirez will look to become a household name
Gilberto Ramirez vs. Giovanni Lorenzo: The best way for a fighter to become a fan favorite in the sport of boxing is to score knockouts.  Fans, especially casual ones love to see knockouts and this Friday on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights there chances of seeing one are high.  That is because the card is being headlined by the unbeaten Gilberto Ramirez (27-0, 21 KO) who is promoted by Canelo Promotions and is being brought along at a slow yet intelligent pace.  Ramirez will be facing off against ring veteran Giovanni Lorenzo (33-6, 25 KO) in a 10 round super middleweight bout.  Ramirez is the fighter to watch out for in this fight.  The way he has been brought along is very smart.  While many young pugilists face off against fighters with losing records, Ramirez has fought mostly tough veterans with winning records.  Ramirez has not fought any top talent but he wasn't fighting tomato cans either.  He has been very impressive in his last two bouts, beating Derrick Findley by unanimous decision and Don Mouton by 1st round knockout.  Ramirez has long arms and his jab is decent but with his height and reach he could make it his best weapon with some work.  He fights out of the southpaw stance and has a good straight left hand which as of now is his best weapon.  Ramirez is still raw and doesn't move around the ring particularly well but he is only 22 years old and still learning on the job.  Lorenzo is much older at 33 years old and with that age has come many more notable fights.  Lorenzo has fought Daniel Jacobs, Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam, Felix Sturm, Sebastion Sylvester, and Raul Marquez.  Unfortunately for Lorenzo whenever he has taken that next step up in competition he has lost, albeit sometimes in controversial fashion.  Lorenzo is an aggressive fighter who has good left hook and moves around well in the ring.  He is much more fluid in his movements than Ramirez is and always remembers to move his head on defense.  Lorenzo may be the slightly sharper puncher and his experience should help him in this fight, however Ramirez has the great equalizer, power.  Lorenzo does have six losses but only one of them didn't go the distance.  That came when Jacobs stopped him in the 3rd round of their 2013 fight.  So it will be interesting to see if Ramirez can be the second man to stop him early.  Both fighters should be in great shape and very sharp since both had two fights in 2013 and have already fought once in 2014.  I think the movement of Lorenzo will frustrate Ramirez early and allow Lorenzo to win a few early rounds.  However I expect the fight to change in the middle rounds as Ramirez starts to flash his power and land more often.  That power will allow Ramirez to win this fight via 8th round stoppage.
