Fox Sports 1 Quick Pick

Perez's only loss came against Omar Figueroa
Michael Perez vs. Jorge Romero: While most fans are looking ahead to Saturday's fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana others are ready for some Monday night boxing on Fox Sports 1.  The network will air a 10 round, junior welterweight bout between Michael Perez (19-1-2, 10 KO) and Jorge Romero (24-7, 21 KO).  Both fighters are very young but seem to be heading in different directions in their careers.  Perez seems to be on the rise and is looked at as a solid prospect while Romero seems like he will be relegated to the role of tough challenger with power.  Perez is a good accurate puncher who comes forward behind a stiff jab.   His left hook is alright at this point and has some power behind it but he doesn't throw it often and it still needs work.  Maybe because of his lack of a left hook Perez has developed a nice uppercut that he likes to follow with a powerful right hand.  Because Perez is such an accurate puncher and typically avoids a tremendous amount of punishment he should be a fighter to watch out for the in years to come.  His opponent Romero looks like a fighter who just hopes he is still in the ring in the years to come.  Romero is only 23 years old but already has seven losses, five of which came by knockout.  He usually makes for exciting fights because one way or another someone is getting knocked out.  Romero has very good power but he also has a weak chin that has continuously let him down.  He is 0-3 in his past three bouts so he really needs a win just to stay relevant.  Romero does have a pretty nice resume for such a young fighter with bouts against Danny Garcia and Pablo Cesar Cano but he lost both of thise fights by knockout.  The resume of Perez isn't as impressive and his biggest fight and only career loss came at the hands of Omar Figueroa.  However Romero is no Figueroa and Perez should look impressive as long as he can avoid the desperate power of Romero.  I expect Perez to fight smart and stay out of Romero's power range which will allow him to box his way to a unanimous decision victory.
