UniMas Quick Picks

Montiel has long been fighting the best
Fernando Montiel vs. Cristobal Cruz: There are three fight cards this Saturday and while many fans in the U.S. will overlook the UniMas card, they shouldn't.  The headline of that card will feature two Mexican veterans who have always fought at a high level, Fernando Montiel (50-4-2, 38 KO) and Cristobal Cruz (40-15-3, 24 KO).  It should be a good fight as the two fighters go head to head for 10 rounds in the featherweight division.  Montiel has been fighting professionaly since 1996 and has always fought the best, which include Jhonny Gonzalez, Nonito Donaire, and Victor Terrazas.  Montiel fights like a seasoned pro, he is patient in the ring and doesn't expend energy unnecessarily.  Montiel likes to pick his spots to throw punches in bunches and has a very good left hand.  One bad habit he has is lunging in with his punches which can open him up to get caught by a counter punch.  But luckily for Montiel he isn't fighting a counter puncher.  Cruz has been fighting as a pro since 1992 and like Montiel has also usually fought top competition like Zahir Raheem, Orlando Salido, Juan Carlos Burgos, and Javier Fortuna.  Cruz is a pressure fighter who likes to do battle from the pocket.  While his left hand is solid his right hand is his big flaw.  He doesn't throw the right hand particularly fast and he reaches with it.  Cruz will probably be the one forcing the action while Montiel will be happy to let him expend his energy while he picks his spots.  This should be a close fight and Cruz will be able to put some rounds in the bank because he will be more active, however I think in their current form Montiel is the better fighter and will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Berchelt looks to remain perfect
Miguel Berchelt vs. Luis Eduardo Flores: If the main event didn't promise to be electric enough the co-feature should make up for it.  That fight features two of the biggest punching little men in the sport, Miguel Berchelt (21-0, 18 KO) and Luis Eduardo Flores (15-1, 13 KO) battling for 10 rounds in the featherweight division.  Berchelt is an orthodox fighter with a very stiff jab.  He fights with a lot of confidence, he doesn't try to feint and tiptoe his way in, he comes straight ahead behind his jab and looks to land power.  Something he still needs to work on is cutting off the ring instead of just following his opponent around it but at only 22 years old the young Mexican fighter still has time to sharpen his skills.  Berchelt also needs to work on throwing his right hand more which is his power hand.  However one very impressive thing for such a young fighter is the fact that while he is usually the aggressor he is also very comfortable while being backed up and counter punching and has scored knockouts doing so.  While Berchelt hasn't yet fought any top dogs he has faced solid competition on his way up.  On the other hand Flores has faced much weaker opposition and out of his sixteen opponents only two had winning records.  Flores is known as a power puncher but it remains to be seen if he has legitimate power or has just been facing pushovers.  Even if Flores has some real power his skills aren't as sharp as Berchelt who looks like he could be a real contender for a title someday.  I expect the action to start fast with Flores trying to run through Berchelt like he has done with some of his weaker opponents.  However Berchelt is the best opponent he has faced and he won't be able to beat him.  I think Berchelt will win this fight via 6th round stoppage.
