UniMas Quick Picks

Beltran Jr. gave Martinez all he could handle
Miguel Beltran Jr. vs. Carlos Diaz: It's no secret that this February's boxing schedule is lacking any big name stars so many casual fights might be counting down the minutes until March arrives.  But just because the stars aren't big doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of interesting fights.  One of those fights can be found on UniMas this Saturday and will act as the main event.  It is a 10 round junior lightweight matchup between tough brawler Miguel Beltran Jr. (28-2, 18 KO) and young prospect Carlos Diaz (12-0, 6 KO).  Beltran Jr. has been in some notable fights, none bigger that his split decision loss to Roman "Rocky" Martinez.  That fight showed a lot of fans that Beltran Jr. is capable of giving top fighters a lot of problems.  Beltran Jr. isn't the slickest boxer in the sport, instead he enjoys fighting at close range where he can really dig to the body.  He will have the faster hands in this bout and while his knockout rate isn't eye popping, his right hand can do plenty of damage.  Diaz is the great unknown in this fight.  It will be his first 10 round bout and Beltran Jr. is a big step up from the level of competition he has been facing.  Diaz doesn't have the fastest hands in the world but he is surprisingly poised for a fighter of only 19 years old.  He moves well in the ring and seems to have a good idea of what he wants to do.  Unfortunately for Diaz his lack of real hand speed isn't his only problem.. When Diaz throws his right hand he has a tendency to crouch down first which tells his opponent the punch is coming, then he throws it very wide and doesn't always keep his left hand at home for defense.  While Diaz may have a solid future in the sport Beltran Jr. is just too much for him at this point.  I expect the action to be good throughout the fight with Beltran Jr. doing most of the punching and Diaz doing most of the boxing and moving.  This fight will end in the 8th round when Beltran Jr. connects with a right hand that Diaz won't see coming and knocks him out.

Hilares' last fight ended in tragedy
Raul Hirales vs. Fernando Vargas Jr.: The co-main event will also be 10 rounds this time in the junior featherweight division and will feature two fighters with something to prove.  Raul Hirales (20-2-1, 9 KO) will be trying to show fans that his last fight isn't still effecting him.  In that fight Hirales took on Francisco Leal who Hirales knocked out in the 8th round.  Unfortunately the punishment Leal sustained was too great and he sadly passed away three days after the fight from a brain injury.  Many fighters are never the same after killing, or seriously injuring a competitor but we should find out quickly if Hirales still has the hunger to fight.  Across the ring, Fernando Vargas Jr. (26-7-3, 18 KO) will be trying to show fans he deserves to be in televised fights and isn't there simply because of his famous father.  Hirales isn't a big puncher but he is accurate and doesn't mind trading blows, especially since he has such a good chin.  On the other hand Vargas Jr. has much better power but his chin isn't nearly as good as Hirales' and he has been knocked out twice.  If Hirales is still a little gun shy after the Leal tragedy he may get cleaned out by Vargas Jr. who will be sure to jump on him early.  However if Hirales is able to put that fight behind him he should be able to control the pace of the fight and outbox Vargas Jr. pretty easily.  I'm not expecting Hirales to look very sharp much like Mike Perez's first fight back after nearly killing Magomed Abdusalamov but he is still a much better boxer than Vergas Jr. and will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.
