Showtime Quick Picks

Love still hasn't taken that next step
J'Leon Love vs. Vladine Biosse: This Friday Showtime will once again air a ShoBox: The New Generation card headlined by a few fighters promoted by Mayweather Promotions.  One of those fighters is J'Leon Love (16-0, 9 KO) and he will be taking on Vladine Biosse (15-2-2, 7 KO) in a 10 round super middleweight bout.  Love is only 26 years old and has a perfect record but still he has left something to be desired.  Love hasn't yet taken that next step up in competition and continues to fight journeymen or club type fighters.  His toughest fight was against Gabriel Rosado and while he won the fight by split decision most people thought he lost and it was ruled a no contest after he tested positive for a banned diuretic.  Love followed that disappointing performance up by knocking out Lajuan Simon in the 6th round but fans are still waiting for him to step up.  Stepping up won't happen against Biosse who is a club fighter with slow hands.  Biosse's only real challenge came against Denis Grachev and he was knocked out in the 4th round.  Even though Biosse isn't a great fighter this still should be a good fight.  Biosse is a come forward type fighter who throws hard looping punches while Love is more reserved and picks his spots.  Biosse doesn't have a great chin so if Love is sharp he may be able to knock him out but if he doesn't score the knockout he still should be able to control the fight.  Love's faster hands and superior skills will allow him to win this fight by the way of 7th round stoppage.  If Love does win this fight it's about time he stops playing it safe and faces some real competition.

Jack will look to rise to the next level
Badou Jack vs. Derek Edwards: Another one of Mayweather's fighters will also be appearing on this card and he may have a brighter future than Love.  That fighter is Badou Jack "The Ripper" (16-0-1, 11 KO) and he will be challenged by Derek Edwards (26-3-1, 13 KO) as they square off for 10 rounds in the super middleweight division.  Jack likes to control fights with a jab that he follows up with a good right hand.  One thing Jack could improve on is his footwork.  He doesn't exactly have cement feet but if he had quicker lateral movement and moved better defensively he could become an even better fighter than he is now.  The interesting thing about this fight is that Edwards is like a poor man's version of Jack.  He has a solid jab that he likes to follow with a wide right hand and he also doesn't have the best footwork.  In fact Edward's footwork is even slower than Jack's.  It will be important for Jack not to stand and trade with Edwards, not that he couldn't handle the heat but he wouldn't look very impressive trading with a inferior fighter.  Jack needs to control the distance with his jab and move laterally around the ring, forcing Edwards to follow him and wait for countering opportunities.  If Jack wants to continue his rise in the sport he will need to impress against Edwards, and not just impress but control.  Edwards doesn't have a good chin and has been knocked out twice in his three losses so if Jack waits for his chance he should be able to counter with big punches and score a solid knockout.  I think Jack will catch Edwards with a good right hand while Edwards comes forward wildly and knock him out in the 8th round.
