Showtime Quick Picks

Lundy will be a good test for the young Santana
Angelo Santana vs. Henry Lundy: This Friday Showtime will once again put on a ShoBox: The New Generation card which features top prospects.  The main event of that card will be headlined by rising power punching prospect Angelo Santana (14-1, 11 KO) as he takes a big step up in competition against Henry Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KO) better known by his nickname "Hammerin' Hank."  They will be fighting 10 rounds in the lightweight division and this fight should provide a good test for Santana who is coming off his first loss as a professional to Bahodir Mamadjonov who beat him via 9th round TKO, although the stoppage was questionable.  Santana is a Cuban fighter but he doesn't fight like a typical Cuban who focuses on defense and counter punching like Guillermo Rigondeaux.  Instead he stalks his opponents and looks to land his impressive left hand.  That left hand is clearly Santana's best weapon, he uses his jab as more of a measuring stick to land a straight left and if Lundy can avoid that he could give Santana problems.  As far as lightweights go, the southpaw Santana has some of the best power in the division and he will need all of it to beat the veteran Lundy.  Lundy record may not be all that impressive but he has been in some good fights with the likes of John Molina Jr. and Raymundo Beltran.  His career was really on the rocks following back to back losses to Beltran and Viktor Postol but got things back on track in July of 2013 when he easily outpointed Olusegun Ajose.  Lundy has solid defense and primarily uses the philly shell.  He isn't the busiest fighter but he can counter out of his defensive stance and his experience should allow him to frustrate Santana.  I think Santana will want to rebound after his only loss and start this fight off quickly, however Lundy will really be able to frustrate him and control the early rounds with a measured pace.  Things will change during the middle rounds when Santana will start to figure out the defense of Lundy and land his powerful left hand.  Lundy hasn't been stopped since Molina Jr. did it in 2010 but I think Santana will be able to break that streak and win this fight by the way of 9th round stoppage.

Imam & Robinson both look to stay unbeaten
Amir Imam vs. Jared Robinson: The other fight on the ShoBox: The New Generation card features two undefeated prospects looking to stay perfect.  The younger of the two fighters is Amir Imam (12-0, 11 KO) who will be taking on the older Jared Robinson (14-0, 6 KO) in a 10 round junior welterweight bout.  Neither fighter has faced any top competition as a professional and this fight will be big for both of their careers because whoever wins will really raise their profile.  Imam could have a bright future, he is only 23 years old and has a good long jab and a lightning fast right hand.  His defense is still a question mark because he hasn't really been tested yet but his power usually keeps his opponents from opening up and really attacking him.  Robinson certainly will be on the attack.  He isn't as sharp offensively as Imam and he likes to keep his fights on the inside where he can be physical with his opponents and land strong combinations.  Robinson doesn't have the power of Imam and will really need to keep this fight in a phone booth if he wants to win.  Imam likes to fight from the outside where he can use his reach to set up his power punches and if this fight stays on the outside he should be able to handle Robinson pretty easily.  However if Robinson can make this a phone booth fight he may be able to bully Imam and land some good, short combinations because that is where he is the most effective.  I think the sharper skills of Imam will really shine through in this fight and he will win via 6th round knockout.
